Prolixic, have you read Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King? If not you may be interested giving it a try. Just substitute "Hearts" for "Spades" and you may find common ground with the main character.
I checked out Amazon.com and found the section where it says "customers who bought this book also bought:" and, aside from Kill a Mockingbird, it listed:
Animal Farm
Of Mice and Men
The Catcher in the Rye
I guess that's cheating, but my brain is dead. Maybe someone else can chime in.
I'm too nervous to borrow hardbacks. I borrowed a signed copy of an Anne Rice book once and a drop of water somehow ended up on the signed title page. I was horrified! Never again.
I had been so careful. I went so far as to lay the book open on a towel rather than risk the bare table. I...
I read more! Go figure.
I've been doing alot more cleaning, I've noticed. With Christmas around the corner, I guess I have to add shopping. Once the holidays are over, I hope to be reading even more (Xmas gifts) and playing my (hopefully) new computer game.
I didn't think Ian McKellan would be interested in doing Harry Potter. Don't get me wrong, I love the books and enjoyed the films, but I just don't think it would be Mr. McKellan's cup of tea. He's a bit more weighty, if you know what I mean.
I am enjoying reading the Silmarillion, especially as a backstory. I can appreciate LOTR even more because of it. I have to take it in doses, though. I find myself getting bogged down in the detail. I have to reread paragraphs to be sure I didn't miss anything because I have the tendency to...
I'm having information overload! Too many places and too many names to remember. It's interesting stuff, but it may take me a while to finish. I wish I had a map and maybe a summary of events and a character tree. Is it just me?
I cheated and went to the section: Of the Rings of Power and...
I found my answer about death and the Grey Havens in The Silmarillion. I meant to bookmark the page so I could quote directly, but didn't so I'll have to improvise. (Trying to search for a quote in Silmarillion is almost as much a challenge as reading it.)
The Grey Havens is NOT death...
Yes, Richard Harris has died. What a great actor he was! He will surely be missed. It was nice to see that a new generation of filmgoers were able to appreciate his work.
One of our favorite books, as a family, is Davin by Dan Gordon and Zaki Gordon. I can't say enough about this book! It's especially written to be read aloud and to interact with the story. It's for children of any age, although, it's not a picture book, so children will have to be old enough...
I've asked for a Barnes and Noble gift certificate for Christmas. I'm not sure what book I want, though. There are a couple I'm waiting to be released yet, so if I do get a certificate, I may hold onto it.
Prolixic, I highly recommend The Dumas Club. I'd love to get your impression. Have you seen The Ninth Gate, the movie with Johnny Depp? I remember looking forward to it's release, knowing it was based on The Dumas Club. Unfortunately, it barely resembled the book and worse yet, it was trash.
Oh yes! I try to read anything he puts out. I loved The Dumas Club! Too bad they made such an awful movie out of it. I especially like books about...mysterious books. The Name of the Rose was another one in that category that I really liked.
I don't think I've read The Nautical Chart...
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. One of my all-time favorites.
The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks is a great start for anyone interested in the genre.
