You heard correctly, the book IS much better. I read it before the film came out and was disappointed that there were so many changes made. It don't think the changes were necessary for it to be a good film, the story was great without the meddling. Of course there was much that was left out...
The accents are very real. There are so many different ones here. I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but you can tell what neighborhood in N.O. you're from by your accent.
I think one thing that worked about the novel is that it could have been set anywhere. New Orleans was just...
YES! He's got the city of New Orleans down pat. Especially the quirky characters. Aside from the story, I enjoyed reading about Holmes on Canal St. (It's no longer there) and the Lucky Dogs peddlers (still around downtown, especially Bourbon St.).
I'll have to look for my copy of Timeline. I really enjoyed the book. Probably because I'm fascinated with the idea of time travel, and with that era. I don't remember the epilogue, though.
Have you ever been thoroughly disgusted with the ending of a book? If so, were you enjoying it up until the ending or were you struggling all the way through, waiting and hoping for the pay off?
Children of the Mind has been out for years, Prolixic. Check it out if liked the series. I also read Enchanted. I was looking for something else by Card to read after finishing the Ender's Game series. It's been awhile, but I think I liked it. Not as much as Ender, though.
With all this...
I didn't read the book, but checked out the 1979-80(?) version because of this thread. I really enjoyed the story, but not the execution. It was very slow moving and lots of very dated music. Very 1970's TV music. Anyway, I guess I'll have to read the book. I'd like to see the A&E version...
A couple of my my fantasy favorites:
Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (anxiously awaiting book 10)
Song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin (anxiously awaiting book 4)
As far as scifi, Ender's Game series, by Orson Scott Card, is my favorite. I haven't read the Ender's Shadow novels...
Some of his books are more fantasy than horror. The Dark Tower series, for instance. There are some horror elements, but it's mostly fantasy. The Stand wasn't purely horror, either. It had alot of fantasy elements. That's what makes his books interesting. You always get a little more.
obarz, i read the previous post and didn't think you were being dumped on. Of course, you can't help the way you feel. I thought it was a healthy discussion, which is encouraged here. Please feel free to express your opinion.
I hope to read more from you!
I enjoyed reading The World According to Garp. I readseveral others back in the '80s, but couldn't get into them. I havent' try anything of his since. I'm willing to get him another try.
The World Series was an emotional event in our house. My husband is from the LA area and is a big Angels fan. He's been waiting his entire life for this. You can imagine his response!
I saw it in the bookstore. The display and cover looks intreguing. So course I'm a sucker for a fantasy. Can you do a book review when you're done, jessica?
No pressure, mind you.
I feel very strongly about "The Truth". Does that make sense? I also feel for any artist that spent time and effort creating any piece of work. I'm not a purist, however. Curiosity will sometimes win out.
Glad to see that we have different opinions. Otherwise we'd be spending allot of...
