I read the classics of literature because they are usually the best writing from their times. Twain or Steinbeck weren't the only writers in those days, but many of the others have filtered out because they really weren't that good.
Books being published today haven't had that filtering...
1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Rereading it now!
2. The City and the Stars.
3. The End of Eternity.
4. Martian Chronicles.
5. Hugo Winners, vols. 1 and 2, edited by Asimov. These are still the best collections of classic short stories. I always recommend them for people new...
The meaning revealed!
Supposedly:
1. Your choice of favorite animal reveals the way you view yourself.
2. Your second choice reveals the way others view you.
3. Your third reveals the way you actually are.

That is also one reason why I want to own the books I have read. Some passage will come to...
Every published piece is edited. A writer hands a story to an editor knowing that the editor will put his or her stamp on it. Writers should choose which publications to send their work to with that in mind. They should choose publications with a style of editing that agrees with their...
Huh. The covers are cooler on the U.K. editions.
My opinion is that the series isn't overrated as such, because most people don't claim that it is great literature or anything. Instead, I think it is overhyped. Its popularity has snowballed. People read it because everyone else they know...
Motokid, you're asking some good questions.
I just don't see a point in critiquing a 14-year-old's work. They have too much to learn. I wish schools did a better job of teaching it to them.
I do critique the writing of adults, however. If fact, it's my job. Since people pay me for my...
Start with something positive, then blast 'em.
Er, no, wait. Start with something positive, then give them advice on what needs improving. Words that are bitter or smarmy do nothing but make the commenter feel superior.
On the other hand, it is up to the writer to reply to critiques with...
