    Subvocalization...Grrr!

Hold a pencil in your lips. Also, notice your breathing, and maintain a regular, relaxed breathing pattern.

*A Harry Potter Book Could Make You Rich In Under A Day*

The true first issue, btw, had no dust jacket, but illustrated boards instead.

I'd rather read Dan Brown than......

    Bridges of Madison County.

    Ray Bradbury: The Martian Chronicles

The chapter "Way in the Middle of the Air" is a model of the craft of writing a short story. In addition, the book's anti-colonialist theme was ahead of its time.

    so what the big deal

One reason to read a book even after you've seen the movie is to get more of what you enjoyed. You'll know the plot by then, but if you liked the characters, settings, etc., you'll get to spend more time with them in the book. No movie can include every scene from a book, let alone every joke...

    Favorite Words

Just recently, I've really been liking the word butterfly. One of my longer-term favorites is the word spooky.

Book or story with the line...

Treasure Island. If you don't remember the book from the first time around, read it again. It's worth it.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Seventeen people have posted in this thread. The chances that we would all agree on almost any topic are small. The goal of an internet forum isn't usually to reach consensus, but to collect a range of views.

    I'm So Happy

    Now that's self discipline.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Posted not as a criticism of anybody, but because someone asked: Gone or Went? Gone is the past participle of to go. Used as the verb of a sentence, it must always be preceded by an auxiliary verb such as has, have, had, is, am, are, was, were, be, or one of their contractions. Went...

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Thanks, Stewart--an excellent all-in-one discussion. Now that's scary.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

As it happens, I've never noticed a different grammar among Australians, though certainly many unique and eloquent figures of speech, and also different spelling and punctuation.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Yes. I admit I bristle at the question, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed out of hand. First of all, notice the book I'm currently reading. Omigod, does she have my number. Also, I think grammar, style, logic, consistency, etc., reflect on the credibility of a book. If both...

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

It's about time someone started a thread about this book. ;) Anyway, the 14-year-old daughter of a friend of mine is thinking of reading it. I read the first page to her, and she thought the action in the first few paragraphs was "clever" and "neat." I pointed out the errors in...

A novel with pictures vs one without pictures

'What is the use of a book,' thought Alice, 'without pictures?'

    Dan Brown - Under Oath?

"Fortunately it is not part of my judgement to assess the literary worth of the books or even the truth behind them...I suppose in the world of publication 40m buyers cannot be wrong." And yet...

    Contractions and writing style

Sometimes a syllable or two needs to be added or contracted to preserve a rhythm that the author has going. I can't speak for the author you're currently reading, but you might try reading a passage out loud to see if that's what's going on.

    Page Number Check

Yep--I do this too. As for the lack of indexes in fiction, that's why I find bootleg texts of books floating around the Internet, and the full-text searching at Amazon, invaluable.

    I've had it

No, actually, it was the opposite--somewhat of a parallel complaint to yours, though as I said, mostly about some other sites, or maybe the world of Web forums in general.

    Calling All Agents And Publishers

The dangling construction here wouldn't impress an agent or publisher. Work on grammar and style. As you write, you might want to use the services of a freelance editor.
