The chapter "Way in the Middle of the Air" is a model of the craft of writing a short story.
In addition, the book's anti-colonialist theme was ahead of its time.
One reason to read a book even after you've seen the movie is to get more of what you enjoyed. You'll know the plot by then, but if you liked the characters, settings, etc., you'll get to spend more time with them in the book. No movie can include every scene from a book, let alone every joke...
Seventeen people have posted in this thread. The chances that we would all agree on almost any topic are small. The goal of an internet forum isn't usually to reach consensus, but to collect a range of views.
Posted not as a criticism of anybody, but because someone asked:
Gone or Went?
Gone is the past participle of to go. Used as the verb of a sentence, it must always be preceded by an auxiliary verb such as has, have, had, is, am, are, was, were, be, or one of their contractions.

And yet...
Sometimes a syllable or two needs to be added or contracted to preserve a rhythm that the author has going. I can't speak for the author you're currently reading, but you might try reading a passage out loud to see if that's what's going on.
Yep--I do this too.
As for the lack of indexes in fiction, that's why I find bootleg texts of books floating around the Internet, and the full-text searching at Amazon, invaluable.
No, actually, it was the opposite--somewhat of a parallel complaint to yours, though as I said, mostly about some other sites, or maybe the world of Web forums in general.
The dangling construction here wouldn't impress an agent or publisher. Work on grammar and style. As you write, you might want to use the services of a freelance editor.
