    Hi

Welcome to BAR, Jody :) Do you have a favourite book/author?
  4. MonkeyCatcher

    Hard.

No, not at all (unlike a certain big-headed, elitist mod :p).

    Hard.

Fair enough - I can understand where you are coming from. What annoyed me a bit is that you insinuated that people who came in to post books that were entirely appropriate given the first post in this thread were now unwelcome in here. I don't see the harm in letting some discuss LOTR and others...

The first sentence in the book you're reading

The story that follows is one that I never intended to commit to paper. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
  7. MonkeyCatcher

    Hard.

Why does hard have to be interpreted in just one way? There are numerous people in this thread who have viewed the word 'hard' in both ways you mentioned, so surely there should be enough responses that cater to your view of the purpose of the thread. There's no need to get upset because some...

    Hard.

Well seeing as how the founder of the thread mentions LOTR as the book that they found hard to get through, I'm thinking that hard can be interpreted in any way you please.

    Christopher Paolini: Eldest

I've just finished the book, and I have to say that I enjoyed it more than Eragon. I think that I found his training and time with the elves to be more enjoyable than the last book, as I find that kind of stuff more interesting than the actual fighting (which I was glad to see there was not much...

    Help me, please...

Could it be Anne of Green Gables?
  11. MonkeyCatcher

    Hard.

Perhaps LOTR can't be placed on the same literary page as novels by Joyce, but that doesn't mean that people can't find it hard to get through.

    your to-read list

I have my TBR list on a little spiral notebook so that I can take it to the shops and library with me. That being said, I haven't been to the library or bought any books for myself in the longest time, as I want to finish the books that I have bought but not read yet (only 14 to go :D ). After...

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

I'm up to book 60 so far, and I should finish a few more by the end of the month. I'm not sure how this compares to other years, as this is the first year that I have kept track of the amount that I have read. I'm sure that it's a lot more than usual, though.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Most people I've talked to really enjoyed Never Let Me Go (it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, I believe), but like Ions, I wasn't overly taken by it. I'd still recommend you read it, though. As Ions said, A Clockwork Orange is a classic, and as such, a must-read. Having a Nadsat dictionary...

    Question Game

George Bush. I would try my hardest to leave a permanant outline of my hand. Do you believe in miracles?

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

It's for my sister for Christmas - I have already read it, and the copy I had had a nadsat dictionary in the back. My sister can just struggle through it herself :p

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

    The Best Twists

Ender's Game is one book that comes to mind.
  19. MonkeyCatcher

    Hard.

I found The Lord of the Rings difficult to start - it took me about 3 attempts to read past the Tom Bombadil part - but I loved it after that.

What books have you read more than once?

Thanks for your input :) I wasn't sure if I should finish off the series after reading Magician but I think that I will pick up the rest now. What do you think of it? I think that his writing has matured a lot since Eragon, but I am still picking up flaws in his style. I find that he tends to...
