    Christopher Paolini

someone asked-yes, elves and dwarves are pretty much the same everywhere except in harry potter, where they're house elves(I rather dislike the idea. my lotr obsessed friend has had too much influence on me)

which characters in books have inspired you?

i know that when i read books, certain characters really inspire me, which partly makes me obsessed with the book. for example, artemis fowl and hermione granger motivate me to get good grades, and learn and study and commit, they motivate me to not give up, harry potter makes me mad at myself...

When am I *ever* getting to those?

some of the books on your lists i've read and would definately recommend: angels and demons(faily entertaining), and sherlock holmes. Eldest isn't quite ias good, it drags out and gets rather dull. I have a list of about 250 tbr books in addition to piles all over my room. And those books you...

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

pearl, i'll also tell you to read pride and prejudice. it's great ad the 1st of her books i read. then i tried reading emma and another book by austen, and i just barely got through them. they're so very different and not as entertaining!

    George Orwell: Nineteen Eighty-Four

i've never heard of "we" i should read it. i've read both 1984 and animal farm and they were both wonderful, of course, but i think he went a little overboard with the making fun of the soviet union part. my parents and grandparents lived and grewup in the soviet union and while stalin was...

Harper Lee: To Kill A Mockingbird

i just read it, seeing as the school is putting on the play, and i'd say it's great. i actually understood the moral quite well, and i've got to say this really is close to being a classic. although it's a bit dragged out in the end.

    Jane Austen: Pride And Prejudice

i have not yet read northanger abbey but i've heard that it's different from her other books. I read pride and prejudice when i was thirteen and enjoyed it IMMENSELY, i couldn't stop reading it. I loved the satire and witticism. HOwever, I also read Emma, Persuasion and Mansfield Park and those...

    Too many Characters?

personally, i think a lot of fantasy books have too many characters and places and too much history, you know those books? where you can't keep track of everything. there's a lot of them in the adult sci fi/fantasy section. you know those?

historical books about Germany / Berlin

i don't know of any before WWII, but one i've heard of that is supposed to be good, it takes place after WWII: a woman in berlin.

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

I've been reading through the thread and it embarasses me how little i've read of classics! i haven't ready many of hte books you mentioned. Personally, I hated David Copperfield(way to long and autobiographic) and Emma. I enjoyed pride and prejudice very much, but austen's other books just...

    Sarah Dunant: Birth of Venus

i read the book and iagree, really, her entering the convent was unnecessary. when she said she would enter a convent that she dreamed of at the end of part 1 i think, i thought it was some kind of metaphor. i've also read Courtesan, and enjoyed that too for all the research she did and how...

Are you picky about the condition of your books?

i've noticed how many people are so picky about the condition of their books, and while tearing books on purpose(gasp!!) surves no purpose, i think it's the content that matters. I think if a a book is old, dog eared and falling apart it's better then a brand new one-it shows that you've read...

Are you picky about the condition of your books?

i personally don't care about the quality of the book, i care about the content. obviously i don't want to paya lot for a bad book in bad condition, but i'm perfectly fine with buying books in used books stores.
