Finished yesterday, Lawrence Block's, The Burglar in the Rye. A humourous thriller, with a burglar as the hero. Strange sort to pick as a hero but not so bad as Dexter perhaps :-)
Another one I couldn't finish was Emma. A very difficult character to like. But I suppose that is a sign of a good writer, making the reader dislike a character. I believe Jane Austen is more suitable for women readers though.
You must read all of John LeCarre's books. The book The Spy That Came In From the Cold, broke the mold on espionage novels for realism. Tinker Tailor soldier Spy. The Perfect Spy. The Russian House. Smiley's People. The Honourable Schoolboy, to name but a few.
Len Deighton is fun, but not in...
Reading Harlan Coben's One False Move. This is the first time I have read him and probably my last. Some books you wish would never end and others, you can't finish quick enough, so that you can get to the next one. This is one of the latter.
Get Shorty was another film, and Pronto another. Several Westerns were made into films from his books Valdez is coming. Last Stand a Saber River, and Hombre, are the best known.
Started reading Henry James's The Spoils of Poynton, but got quickly bored with it. Found it hard work and uninteresting. soon gave it up. I have read The Turn of the Screw, several times and loved it. But this one did nothing for me.
I haven't read any Donald Westlake, I shall look out for him. Read quite a few Block though.Have six of his on my book shelf and an anthology. I like him a lot.
I have read many Elmore Leonard's books. Just finished one. Out of Sight. Terrific. Her are a few suggestions.Riding the Rap. Swag. Pronto. The Hunted. Get Shorty.
All great reads. He writes terric Westerns too. Many made into films.
I have enjoyed watching The Last Detective adaptation of Leslie Thomas's Dangerous Davies books on TV. So started reading Dangerous Davies and The Lonely Hearts. Really enjoying it. Much of it is different than the adaptation though. But then the film of the books always are different.
