    Last seen...

Last night watched Lost in Translation for the first time, and enjoyed it. It's a funny film and the platonic relationship is very touching and refreshing. One thing that makes me laugh is that the film won Best Original Screenplay (or something like that at the Oscars) but Sophia Coppola did...

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Wow, Stewart. I love your posts! Nice putdown...

How much do you spend on books annually?

Oh God that's a scary question! I wouldn't like to even start my calculations, being as I know I've spent approx £400 on books so far this year and we're only a short way through March! I would say that I easily spend over £1000 in a year - I try to take advantage of charity shops and 3 for...

Any new fantasy series out thats good?

I've reread the series three times so far. And I no doubt will reread again when the fourth, fifth and sixth books come out!

    The Black Magician Trilogy

Like I mentioned, I found them a good solid read, but nothing spectacular. The third book is much more gripping than the second, 'let's do a kind of Harry Potter style' book. I was a little dissatisfied with the second - plenty of other authors have done the whole misfit student who is bullied...

What do bookworms do for exercise?

Hockey for me, so that covers the winter months. Also started ballroom and Latin American dancing, with a touch of salsa on the side.

    The Person Above You.

Pros: Named after a cool band, and has interesting stuff to contribute to actual book discussions Cons: Hard to think of, since there are so many posters on this forum that only the really awful ones stand out as having cons! You certainly don't capitalise, which is an issue for me.

Any new fantasy series out thats good?

New book not even completely written! Check out www.georgerrmartin.com for updates as to how he's getting on. Do no go to amazon.com - they sooo often get release dates completely wrong.

    Style of book help!!!

She may enjoy 'Lucy Talk' by Fiona Walker, which is also written by using diary entries and emails etc.

    Literary London Quiz

Tell how much you got then! Let's compare. I also did terribly, with a measly six from twenty! Obviously I really don't know my London literature...

    Piccoult

I've brought it on a whim, but I have a feeling it'll stay on my shelf while I read other books that interest me more.

    John Steinbeck

I had to do Of Mice and Men at school as well. I've also read The Red Pony and Grapes of Wrath and enjoyed both of them. I think he's a superb writer.

    Dan Brown

Having read both The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, I actually enjoyed the latter more. TDVC's central premise about the Holy Grail is something that I find very very hard to believe, especially since I've also read the sensationalist 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' where most of it was lifted...

    The Virtues of War

Hi there, I haven't read this particular book of Stephen Pressfield's, but I have read Gates of Fire and Tides of War, both of which are really superb. In Gates of Fire, the Spartan army do take men as lovers and it is an integral part of the story, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were...

Suggestions for a 9 year old

An *awesome* book I read as a youngster was 'Room 13' by Robert Swindells. Check him out as a horror author for youngsters. He also wrote 'Hydra', 'The Thousand Eyes of Night' (which similarly terrified me) and a few other titles. These are suspenseful, with no swearing, no romance and little...

Any new fantasy series out thats good?

Hmmm, I'd say that Robin Hobb succeeded admirably with her use of first person perspective in The Assassins Apprentice (and the books that follow)!

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Not so much the talking horse that is the issue - more the fact that the film is pretty much just those two until you get nearer the end.

    marriage

Thank you so much! :) We only got engaged a month or so ago, so everything is still fresh and new, where I'm insisting on referring to my man as the fiancee... Bit sad really :o

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

I'm not sure that some of the later books would translate as well as the ones in the middle. The first book is also slightly thin on plot that can be developed for a film. And The Horse and His Boy involves a boy's journey with a talking horse, which might be a little hard to convey by film...

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

There are seven books, and I would love to see all of them in film :) I'm really looking forward to this, having adored (as a child!) the BBC adaptation. It will be great to see what can be accomplished with a higher budget and slightly better casting.
