    Curse Of A hero

Okay, it's Christmas Eve and I'm feeling very peaceful and generous.... You have the beginnings of some good ideas here about what constitutes heroism. Now, you could expand expand expand upon each and every thought by creating a hero, creating a situation in which he or she exists, and...

    Secret Santa 06?

Sort of like getting Flor to show a sense of humor! Arf, woke up this morning with much better wit and perspective. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book SFG. You're a fast reader. Sounds as though the things Agha Rory or Sayyed Rory does best are the slow, painstaking, closeup entry into situations...

    What are your children reading?

Are the fiction books about Vikings and barbarians? Yes, thank you, I'd like that. He seems to be interested in things like that. He has a large Usborne book that shows the inner workings of an ancient castle that he is fond of. Probably because it has lots of pictures :)

Rory Stewart; The Prince of the Marshes

Thanks for the glimpse, SFG. His style is very readable, imho, for this type of writing. Not flashy, but not dry at all. It's as though you're walking next to the man and he's explaining things along the way. At least that's how the other book felt. Interesting about the Black Watch as well. I'd...

Rory Stewart; The Prince of the Marshes

This sounds really good, SFG, and I plan to read it in 07. What is Black Watch? By the way, his book The Places in Between was one of the NYTimes top 10. It is an amazing travel book that is so much more

    2006?

Nothing half as interesting as BeerGood's list, I'm afraid. But I got a steal on a Sirius for my car and heard something by Yo La Tengo the other day. Another world opening up with some British channels and 3 French channels. Huge learning curve as the music on the foreign stations is so...

    Extraterrestial Visitations. Real?

That's funny, Beer Good! Let's see, er, why would any intelligent life elsewhere actually try to get here? They might come close enough to see how we've managed things and make a big u-turn.

    Embryonic Stem Cell Research...

Oh goodness, yes. Just think of the advances in treatment that are coming from stem cell research. Even though there are no miracle cures so far, we're learning about what causes cells to differentiate and the chemical triggers that may be modifiable someday. Very positive research.

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

Maybe 25-30 a year. Arf, not great and that's reading every day on lunch break and every night. Haven't had any times when I didn't want to read, either. Hard to believe that a reading rut strikes some from time to time.
