Bwa, ha, ha, ha, ha! I have you now!

Deerskin, I agree about Saruman. With Sauron, you at least knew where he stood. He was evil, plain and simple. Not Sauruman, he snuck around and worked in behind the good guys and then--pow! What a scumbag. Then there's Gollum, who is a hero to some--not to me. He just sort of let...

    Science Fiction and Fantasy

Witchchild, believe it or not, I ran across a discussion on a news group that had to have been mostly made up of Tokein haters. Nothing good to say about him at all. Have you ever read The Guardians of the Flame series by Joel Rosenberg? It was about strange things that happened to...

    Library sales

The library in town here is very small. RARELY is there sale--not that I wouldn't attempt to attend if they had one. As far as the book comfort thought goes I agree completely. Books do become old friends after you rearead them. In fact thats one of my qualifiers for a really good book. I...

    Underlining: Addition or Subtraction

I use a pencil to mark some books--mostly non-fiction books. I'll underline what, IMHO, is the main point of the section I'm reading and perhaps write a neat note in the margin as well--especially if I'm taking study notes. Rarely will I use a pen--it has to be Earth shaking for that.

Bwa, ha, ha, ha, ha! I have you now!

Who is the most vile, nasty, evil Science Fiction/Fantasy Villain(Male, Female, or Other) of all time and why?

    Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

I'd say declare your intentions with regards to spoilers when you open the thread and then let the browser beware. I.e., big bold letters that say, Warning! No Spoilers!

Jean M. Auel: The Earth's Children Series

I've read all but the lastest one. The first two, Clan of the Cave Bear and The Valley of the Horses are my favorites. I found myself very sympathetic with Ayla's struggle to fit in with the Clan and then eventually being forced to make her own way in the first. In the second it was just the...

2003 Book of the Month Choices

Deerskin wrote: Indeed, you won't be disappointed. This is Greg Bear at his finest. How about The Legend That Was Earth by James P. Hogan? (Just finished that one.)

How do you choose the book you'll read next ?

I am anxiously awaiting a shipment of books I bought online based on the descriptions and reviews posted. The Author's name had something to do with it too. I made an effort to make my selections based on whether or not it sounded interesting. (Daring don't you think.) I've bought books...

    Andy McNab: Remote Control

You know, Corso, I've met a terrier or two I'd like to shoot myself. Especially the continually moving type with the incessant yip-whine that think they need to sniff your nether regions before you come into the house.

    Do you read non-fiction?

Gardening books, biographies, rusty tractor repair manuals, and various other reference books make up the bulk of my non-fiction reading. Does the dictionary count? I've caught myself reading through the listings a time or two when I was supposed to be looking up a word. (Exciting eh?)

Comparison of Traditional Publishing to Print-on-Demand

So for the word to get out its probably going to take a large number of readers who are willing to bet the better part of a twenty dollar bill that your POD publishing house is printing a good book, right?

Early Readers (Pre-teen & young adult)

OK, this is the top four: Start reading as early as possible. I used to sit and read a story to our oldest every night. (They'll sit through Beatrix Potter at six months because they can't move yet:D ) Then, later, when she was mobile we gave her all sorts of plastic bath tub books and...

Comparison of Traditional Publishing to Print-on-Demand

obarz, isn't there in the publishing industry, still, a stigma attached to vanity and POD publishing? It seems to be something like the perception of the students that got into Harvard purely because of their test scores and the ones that got in because they knew the right people. How would an...

    Boom!

I like Fahrenheit 451 for just pure style in sneaking up on the subject. Bradbury paints it all around you but if you're not paying attention...POW! Suddenly you're in WW3... Number two has got to be Forge of God by Greg Bear. Awesome all around first contact/armageddon story with a...

    Sci Fi or Fantasy Favourites

    Controversy!

Good points all. I think that if anything LOTR the movie has added readers in much the same way that Star Wars added readers to the Sci Fi genre in the 70's and 80's--not that I remember that far back.;) However, I have to add that LOTR is--IMHO--a much better piece of literature than the...
