I agree completely with these recommendations. They are both very good. However check out Messiah and Storm from Boris Starling. That would be exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks for the Mosely recommendation. I will add this to my list. John Connolly is quite good. He is a little violent for most people but it's good. James Lee Burke is about as good as you get.

Anything by James Lee Burke is worth reading. I would read the Dave Robicheaux series first.
