Honestly, writing fiction is an enormous amount of work, about 99% of fiction writers are never published and the majority of those who are published don't make a significant amount of money.
In Hollywood, originality is anything but a virtue. Paramount rejected a recent project that had attached stars, an approved script, and a bankable director by telling the producer, "It's a terrific idea; too bad it has not been made into a movie already or we could have done the remake."...
It bugged me at that time, but I now realize that it is symbolic. (You read. You talk here. You learn.) Don't let me steer you away from the book. It moves at a pretty good pace.
The women here seem to be very soft on a woman who marries for money. Did she really have no choice? Did she really do it for her family, or did she do it because she loved the clothes? (Considering what happened to her sister, I think you'd have a pretty hard time arguing that her decision...
I see the character as allowing herself to be "bought off," by money and pretty clothes. Which is probably why a lot of people find her unsympathetic. (When she does do something admirable, she doesn't even take credit for it.) As soon as I figure out how the heck to use the spoiler, I'll...
I read it a couple of years ago too. I'm going to participate and risk not making sense. If I make a mistake, I'm sure someone will let me know.;)
I actually perferred the sci/fi story. I thought it was more honest.
One thing I remember is that the narrator spent way too much time...
I'm about halfway through it. I have lots of thoughts, which is always a good sign.
If you're a writer, I'd recommend reading the dentist scene. Frey made Oprah believe it, even though it's not true. It's interesting to see how he did that.
The book reminds me a lot of Fear and Loathing...
But did the publisher and the author what to avoid it all? To me, the incident is a reminder of how incredibly difficult it is to sell books and that authors need to go to extraordinary lengths if they want to make money.
Frey's Latest Story
Doubleday has posted James Frey's new author's note on their web site and is now firing up the presses "immediately" to reprint. Selections are below; you can get the full PDF at www.RandomHouse.com:
"During the process of writing the book, I embellished many details...
Not sure if we've discussed this guy, but:
Former Chapel Hill author Nasdijj won national acclaim writing memoirs about his brutal childhood as a Navajo Indian in the Southwest and as a father to two adopted sons who died of AIDS and fetal alcohol syndrome.
In truth, he was Timothy P...
I find it interesting that the most talked about book in the world isn't being heavily talked about here.
Does that mean that we're smarter than everyone else? (Except for me of course; I can't shut up.)

Frey Acknowledges Mistakes on Today's Oprah
"Now like many of you, I have a million little questions," Oprah Winfrey says of James Frey at the top of today's show--an evolution of the viewpoint she expressed in a phone call to the Larry King Show. An ABC news report...
