Trying to find a fantastic fantasy book that isn't part of a series

John Ajvide Lindqvist: Let the Right One in, Handling the Undead Also, pretty much anything written by Neil Gaiman. Terry Pratchett's books can be read as standalone books though if you get hooked you'll find you'll want to read the entire series.

    Need a new VAMPIRE book

Agree wholeheartedly. I adored Anita Blake in the early books but after book 4 I lost interest.

    Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors. I love his ability to laugh at himself. He sets himself up as a bumbling innocent who keeps stumbling into the unlikeliest of situations. I enjoyed his memoir - The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - because it gave me the opportunity to learn...

    Stephen King

I second this recommendation. I love his Bachman novellas. Interestingly, King requested that Rage should no longer be published. He said that, in light of school shootings such as Columbine and others, he felt uncomfortable with the story.

    Monica Ali: Brick Lane

I got about halfway through the book and put it back on the shelf, intending to finish it at a later date. That was several months ago and I still don't feel the urge to finish it. I simply couldn't connect with Nazneen. I wanted to care about her but struggled to find something about her...

Wally Lamb: I Know This Much Is True

I loved this book. I've read it twice and I know I will read it again at some point. The size is intimidating at first but when I finished the book I realised that the book was just the length it should have been. Even the lengthy passages from Dominic's grandfather's diary made sense. It...

    John Connolly: Nocturnes

So good to encounter fellow John Connolly fans. I love his books. Charlie Parker, Angel and Louis are three of the most engaging fictional characters I've encountered in a long time.

    Any recomendations for psychological thrillers?

I would recommend John Connolly - he write mysteries with a dash of the supernatural. His Charlie Parker series is superb.

    Patricia Cornwell/Kathy Reichs Genre?

I second that. I enjoy the Inspector Lynley books very much and Barbara Havers is one of my favourite fictional characters. I'd also recommend Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus series - a strong male protagonist with an equally strong and interesting female partner.

Stieg Larsson: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Hello everyone I registered today and this is my first post (excluding introducing myself in the new members section). I also add myself to the list of people who liked The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I bought the book with modest expectations and was very pleasantly surprised to find...
