John Ajvide Lindqvist: Let the Right One in, Handling the Undead
Also, pretty much anything written by Neil Gaiman. Terry Pratchett's books can be read as standalone books though if you get hooked you'll find you'll want to read the entire series.
Charlaine Harris - The Southern Vampire series starring Sookie Stackhouse
- A light but very entertaining read
Kim Harrison - The Hollows series
- Vampires, witches, pixies, elves, demons and many other beasties to keep you entertained
Charlie Huston - The Joe Pitt series
- 5 books in...
Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors. I love his ability to laugh at himself. He sets himself up as a bumbling innocent who keeps stumbling into the unlikeliest of situations.
I enjoyed his memoir - The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - because it gave me the opportunity to learn...

Yrsa Sigurðardóttir - Thóra Gudmundsdóttir series
Arnaldur Indriðason - Detective Erlendur series
Kathy Reichs - Temperance Brennan series
John Connolly - Charlie Parker series
Ian Rankin - Inspector Rebus series
Ruth Rendell - Inspector Wexford series
Elizabeth George - Inspector Lynley series
Michael Connolly - Harry Bosch series
Dennis Lehane - Kenzie and Gennaro series
Faye &...
I second that. I enjoy the Inspector Lynley books very much and Barbara Havers is one of my favourite fictional characters.
I'd also recommend Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus series - a strong male protagonist with an equally strong and interesting female partner.

I also add myself to the list of people who liked The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I bought the book with modest expectations and was very pleasantly surprised to find...
