Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
By Lynne Truss
From Publishers Weekly
Who would have thought a book about punctuation could cause such a sensation? Certainly not its modest if indignant author, who began her surprise hit motivated by "horror" and "despair"...
I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha right now, and surprisingly the writing style reminds me a lot of Harry Potter. The way each chapter is set up is a lot like Potter, and being set in a culture that is very different from ours it even reads somewhat like a fantasy. It's extremely good, however...
Only book I finished was the 6th Harry Potter, but I'm somewhat close to finishing Memoirs of a Geisha, so maybe I'll be able to finish it before it's officially May.
Prey by Michael Crichton is very thrilling
I haven't read it yet, but 'The Stand' is suppose to be a masterpiece by Stephen King.
For more help you might check out the genre forum "Horror" here.
I'm from Oklahoma too, and yeah other than books like The Grapes of Wrath there haven't been too many novels set here. Though I believe there have been a few horror novels with an Oklahoma setting, one that comes to mind is Psycho by Robert Bloch.
"Jack Nasty"
"About all the travelin' I do is around the coffee pot looking for the handle"
"If you can't fix it, you gotta stand it."
"Jack, I swear.."
"You don't go there to fish"
"Whatcha waitin' for cowboy? The matin' call?"
"Fast or slow I just like the direction you're...
He was sleeping in the portrait.
It's very possible Dumbledore will come back, but I hope he doesn't.. I'd much rather Harry visit Hogwarts to get some advice from his picture.. though I'm not so fond of the idea of the dead being thinking creatures in those moving portraits, so maybe I hope...
You have to look at the good books that appear on the best-sellers list too though. J. K. Rowling is outselling everyone right now, and IMO her books are literary classics already. Stephen King is a regular and many of his.. .earlier novels were fantastic, maybe not recently, but I haven't...
I read bestsellers sometimes just so I can join in those "hot topics" but mostly I read them if the story looks appealing. Best Selling books are a common bond between readers, and it's always fun to read a book that your friends have too.
I wouldn't say all popular books are "crap" though...
I've been checking out March by Geraldine Brooks on Amazon.com and it looks interesting, though not exactly something I would be interested in. I might put it on my To Read list though.
The authors Geraldine Brooks, David M. Oshinsky, Caroline Elkins, Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin were awarded the Pulitzer Prize today.
The 2006 Pulitzer Prizewinners in Fiction, History, Biography, Poetry and General Nonfiction were announced by Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia...
I was really undecided whether I liked that book or not when I read it. It was good I guess, just really slow.. and somehow unimpressive. I managed to finish though, so that's good.
My latest Book purchases have been Arthur Golding - Memoirs of a Geisha and The Story-to-Screenplay thing to...
It wasn't stupid at all, it was perfect. You do realize the series is going to End at the 7th book? A lot of people seem to be responding negatively to this book just because of the tragic death. That's stupid, especially when the next book will be the conclusion. Dumbledore's death will...
There's no such thing as an overly long book as long as everything in it is well written. I can get through the longest harry potter quicker than i can most books 300-400 pages long, and never ever feel bored or like i was reading something that wasn't important to the story. No, she needs to...
There are definately a lot of things that need to happen in the 7th one, so I think anything less than 900 would be unworthy of a suitable conclusion.
*HBP SPOILERS**
I believe Harry when he says he won't be attending Hogwarts next year, and for that some length can be taken away...
Oh.. well I knew I should have stopped in those giant threads. I read The Da Vinci Code and thought it was a well-written page-turner. I then read Angels & Demons and had a wave of dejavu.. it was basically the same book, but still well-written and a page-turner.
If they think Dan Brown...
C. S. Lewis - The Screwtape Letters
Amazon.com
Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional...
I haven't been active in the 10-page Dan Brown discussions, but I dont think people think he's a bad author, merely that his little Jesus story did not deserve at all to be best selling for 3 years or whatever it is. I, too, could name 1,000s of other authors i would prefer Dan Brown to. But...
