Many a good read that's quite hilarious has been mentioned here ( especially Toole) but I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned Spider Robinson , try Time Travelers Strictly Cash and Callahans Crosstime Saloon , especially if you're a fan of puns.

Yup , that's correct , Billy Bob Holland. Heartwood is a good one , but then they're all good. Interestingly enough , Burke uses his daughter Alafair as a character in the Robicheaux novels. And don't forget Tripod the three legged raccoon.
The Kellermans frequently draw that comment...
Excuse me? Sorry but I don't copy and paste , and I don't "drop names" so your rather supercilious postulation is in error , I had thought that this was a forum for free discussion of literature. Since of course you deem what folks may post then I'll bow out.

Some more that I should have put in the other post.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti ( owner founder of The City Lights Bookstore)
Eric Nord ( Big Daddy..himself and a great poet)
Ken Kesey of course ( who originated the Acid Test and the Merry Pranksters in the old La Honda days)...
Read the rest of Kerouac i.e. The Dharma Bums, The Subteraneans, Visions of Cody,Big Sur, desolation Angels etc. Along with his collaborative effort with Burroughs " And the Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks" .Don't miss the rest of Burroughs work , The Soft Parade , Junkie , Queer ( which...
Read the book first , though as with many movies you might well find the film to be less than satisfying afterwards.
The book is highly entertaining , and the film is actually a fairly good adaptation as films go.

Burke's Montana /Texas stories have a different protagonist , but are just as texturally rich and well researched.
For the original poster , you might want to try Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski series or Nora Roberts writing as J.D.Robb , her Eve Dallas series is quite entertaining...
r.e. Hunter , the character you refer to in Point of Impact is ongoing and started as a child in Hunter's books wherein his father is the central character (trying to not give away spoilers here) I've always found the majority of his stuff to be highly entertaining.

Brautigan got missed due to his jamming a model 29 smith and wesson into his palate and pulling the trigger down in Bolinas quite some time ago , a brilliant poet and writer but a hugely troubled man.
His influence is still felt though , without Brautigan there would have been no...
He's one of my perennial favorites , and few writers exhibit the range and scope that he's capable of.
I've run across individuals that were/are absolutely amazed that Terms of Endearment and The Last Picture show came from the same pen that Lonesome Dove and it's adjuncts originated...
As regards Twain , his body of work needs to be looked at within the context of the times that it was authored in. While said word *is* abhorrent in modern society , it was common parlance during that era.
As an aside to Robert...nice scoot in your avatar.

Burke is beyond brilliant , and having met the man , he's highly approachable and down to earth and once you get him rolling will discuss literature with you until your ears fall off.
And I find it amazing that his first work was turned down repeatedly by quite a number of publishers...
Wow. Just one? I've given considerable thought to this , but I don't think I can narrow it down to just one. To do so would be personally impossible for me.
Michael Connelly is very good , Concrete Blonde might be a good starting point , and for what it's worth Harry Bosch ( Hieronymous) is a both Heroic and comic figure , but he always does the right thing , even at times with considerable cost to himself.

Good read , quite up to the standard of the rest of his work , which is of course saying something. But then I'll read anything Burke writes , just as I'll read anything J.A. Jance , Lee Child , Block or myriad others write.
If you're from the areas of the country his novels are set in...
