Try reading some Michael Marshall Smith. I have just read Only Forward, and the first half of the book seemed just like a Douglas Adams for the next generation. I couldn't comment on his others, but Martin certainly likes them, and his style is highly amusing.
That's the one, especially if it's my book that they're borrowing! I carefully retrieved my copy of "Last and First Men" from its spine-snapping position and balanced it on the edge of the table (a suitable page-keeping compromise), only for my mum to return it to its former position! I almost...
I have to say that cover illustrations rarely have a great effect on me, but editions, however, do. Whenever considering buying a sci-fi book now, I always choose one from either the SF Masterworks or Voyager Classics ranges, knowing that I am more or less guaranteed a worthwhile read from...
I was about to say Prince Andrei Bolkonsky. Then I realised that Tolstoy is hardly English literature.
Do you want one from a classic novel? Because in a more contemporary vein, it's hard to beat Lord Asriel from His Dark Materials for sheer style.
Themistocles was a famous Athenian statesman and general, renowned for initiating the building of the Athenian Navy without which the Persians would not have been beaten at Salamis, and also for being a bit of a schemer. I originally chose it as a tag for online gaming as I play mainly RTS...
Sounds very interesting. I had considered Bentham as a natural stepping-stone from Mill (being a major influence and fellow utilitarian), but I may go with Paine instead.
I haven't as of yet read any Thomas Paine, and obviously A Vindication of the Rights of Man is the one of his that I want to read first. If you recommend him, then he'll be next on my list - I'm trying to divide my attentions equally between political/philosophical works and fiction, and I was...
It's worth it, I promise you!
SillyWabbit - The manga goes so much further than the anime, and, though the film is still excellent, I think the original is infinitely superior.
EDIT: Oh, and lies, judging by your avatar it should be right up your street!
A nice big Amazon order is being processed as we speak:
The Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clarke
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester (thanks to Litany for that one!)
On Liberty and Other Essays by J.S. Mill
Utopia by Thomas More
Arrive...
Your oldest child may enjoy The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart, illustrated by Chris Riddell. They are one of the best children's fantasy series in recent years (beaten only by the incomparable His Dark Materials in my opinion), supremely imaginative, blackly humourous and really quite dark in...
I've ranted about this graphic novel, the sublime genius that is Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece, several times since I joined this forum but have yet to hear much of it from anyone else. I wondered if anyone else had read it (or indeed seen the film), and what they thought of it?
Essentially a...
I was about to say that I could live off just those three items of food! Oh, as long as I had some paracetamol as well. (It's practically an integral part of my diet.)
I use either FireFox or IE, depending on my mood and what I'm planning on doing. The FireFox download manager is very handy (and it means I don't have to deal with the supreme monstrosity that is DAP), whereas IE has the advantage of speed and is also, unlike FF, capable of launching BitTorrent.
