I love that Kingsolver provides Brother Fowles as the alternative picture of Christianity lived out among people rather than forced on them.
A brilliant and beautiful book.
I tried to get into his Otherland series, but gave up after the first couple of books. They just didn't do it for me. I am already trapped in one incredibly slow-moving series (Wheel of Time) and couldn't afford another.
That being said, I haven't read any of his pure fantasy stuff.
I read it a couple of weeks ago. His findings are pretty interesting and what he does with stats is far different than the kinds of things you usually hear in the media. His approach of asking questions and then trying to figure out how he will get the answers is different than a lot of research...
Watching Dave Matthews and Friends live online tonight. Dodo will be in my head for the next three days. But in a really good way.
Once upon a time
When the world was just a pancake
Fears would arise
That if you went too far, you'd fall
But with the
Passing of time
It all became more...
I go paperback most of the time simply because if I fall asleep reading it in bed it hurts less when it hits me in the face.
A description of one of my favorite places on earth. Makes me a little teary just thinking about it because it's five hours away. Must drive North soon.
Saw Hotel Rwanda last night. Amazing film with a powerful story and some big time performances. Don Cheadle was incredible. Even Nick Nolte was good in it.
I just finished last night and really enjoyed it. I felt like Eugenides for the most part worked hard to make his characters honest and real.
Agreed. The whole last "book" with Cal's story felt rushed to me. I wondered if it was a device to help convey that fact that it was being told as...
We shouldn't kill all of them. We should keep a few in a remote zoo where we can use them as a warning to future generations of the evil of pop. That, and throw things at them through the bars occasionally.
Forcing them to live life without amplification, overdubbing, and hair product would...
Huge baseball and National League fan here. Still a bit in shock that the NL hasn't won a Series game in two years. But hopeful for 2006. Why?
2004 Red Sox win the Series for the first time since 1918
2005 White Sox win the Series for the first time since 1917
Who does that leave?
2006...
I talk about books with people all of the time. I'm fortunate I guess to be surrounded by people who enjoy reading (one of my best friends is working on his masters in literature). I have a group of guys who get together at least once a week and what we are reading is always on the list of...
Probably my favorite King read. It's one of the few books I've read that got my tension level up while I was reading it. I wasn't scared, I was focused.:D
Enjoy it.
The wife and I caught Hitchhiker's Guide on DVD the other night and ever since I've had the title song -- So Long and Thanks for all the Fish -- coming up at very inopportune times.
You can hear and view a flash of it here if you must. Consider yourself warned.
So long and thanks for all...
Anyone else read this yet? I finished it the other day and loved it! Much better than The Hours (IMHO). His character development is really impressive, especially considering the short amount of time he has to present them and get them in motion (the novel is a series of three shorts tied...
Just finished Palahniuk's Stranger than Fiction. It's a collection of essays and non-fiction material that he's written over the years. Reading it led me to two conclusions.
1) Palahniuk is a great writer.
2) We live in a weird world.
It's not for everyone, but if you like his stuff...
Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, Narnia, -- all great recommendations and great series. I devoured those things when I was around that age. I also remember really liking the Tripods series by John Christopher.
Atari 400 complete with the tape recorder / disk drive. I'm not sure I could do more than draw lines, type some homework and play games on it, but it felt big time in the day.
