These are all good suggestions for a Salvtore reader. Brooks is friends with Salvatore too, FYI.
I would start with the Sword of Shanarra - don't read the prequel. I don't recall how much is spoiled by it but I wouldn't recommend it to start with. Definitely a LOTR clone, but it was the...
Fantasy - First Xanth book, I think...either that or the Hobbit (one of them followed the other)
Sci-fi - My Dad's old Doc EE Smith novels, I believe - The Skylark of Space
Thanks for the Locus link.
The problem I get is that I am in a fairly rural area (mid-Michigan). We do have a Barnes & Noble in the mall, but I doubt any author of note is going to come here.
I would be willing to drive to Detroit, Lansing, - maybe even Chicago... I seriously considered...
Hey, thanks in advance for any input..
Any advice on how to find author book signings? I don't live in a metropolitan area, but I would be willing to drive for several hours to have a book signed in Chicago, Toronto, etc (coming from mid-Michigan).
Are there any mailing lists, webpages...
To a fantasy newbie, I would recommend these books. Most of this spring into series, but you should read one to see how you feel on it
Raymond Fiest's Magician (sometimes two books, apprentice and master, sometimes 1 combo book)
David Eddings Belgariad/Mallorean (although his writing has...
Well, Salvatore's new book was good as usual (picked it up this afternoon, just finished it). Literary masterpieces they aren't, but quality stories they are.
Eagerly awaiting the last Salvatore novel in his current Dark elf trilogy. His best writing in quite a while, so far. Out next week. If I can afford it.
The Shinn angel books are good, but they are truly romance stories underneath. No offense :D I like the concept, though.
Currently just starting on the new Terry Brooks Shanarra book. Had to go back and re-read the last one to refresh. It'll take a while - I've got too much reading in my...
A favorite book of sorts...I had to read a book in H.S. - it had to be one of the books on a list of "classics". I picked Alas, Babylon because it was the only one that truly interested me.
I'm a sucker for post-apocolpytic stories.
I read the first book, slowly, painfully. I haven't had that much trouble reading a fantasy book since LOTR. I tend to 'absorb' books - about 2-4 pages a minute (ever since H.S.). I kept 'bouncing off' his book, kind of like I used to do on LOTR and on Shakespeare (or anything old English. I...
I feel the same way. I'm waiting for GRR Martin to finish his series before he can make the list. I'm the same way about favorite bands though - they have to have at least 3 albums I love before they can become a "favorite". :D Perhaps this mentality comes from reading too many trilogies.
I started out on Xanth books, so I read quite a bit of Piers.
Probably the first 10 or so. The first few Xanth books are still OK(but my tolerance for them drops past the one about the barbarian guy and the yin/yang wizards. I think #5/6-ish.
Personally when it comes to Piers, I like the...
Hi, new member here, clicked on through via a banner at hometheaterforum.com (where I am a very active member).
Despite my dabbling in HT and videogames, a good book always comes first. Books are portable, too! :D
My top 5 have changed in recent years. I've been reading fantasy/sci-fi...
