I can tell this is a thread that will beef up my to-read list as well...as if it needs it...
Although I've had many great reads since it, I don't think any novel has pulled me in as strongly as A Simple Plan by Scott Smith.
I was so absorbed I felt like a co-conspiritor
OK I'll play. These may be repeats; if they are I'll give you your money back.
Imajica - Clive Barker (dark fantasy)
Hyperion - Dan Simmons (SciFi)
Mercy - David L. Lindsey (Suspense)
Ishmael - Daniel Quinn (fiction geared to change your outlook on the world)
Necroscope - Brian Lumley...
I wasn't as thrilled over this novel as most people were, but I did have a really good laugh over the part where Satan considers Satanists.
It's been ages since I read it but it was something along the lines of how he regarded Satanists as well-meaning but equated them to Neighbourhood Watch...
Can anyone recommend any good novels that involve Hell? It's always so interesting see or read writers' depictions of it.
The only novel that comes to my mind is What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson.
I'm reminded just now of an old St. Elsewhere episode where Howie Mandel's character...
The Wasp Factory was my first introduction to Mr. Banks. Not for the squeamish and one of the most unforgettable books I've read. I loved it.
Player of Games I enjoyed a lot more than Consider Phlebas...the Culture is a very fascinating concept.
Complicity I found was just an OK story but...
You absolutely MUST read Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It is brilliant.
It does lead to a few more books but even if you only read Hyperion it is worth it.
Another rarely mentioned novel, and one of my favorites, is Treason by Orson Scott Card. The hero is a radical regenerative...I won't tell...
There was a novel called Fear that was released over 10 years ago by L. Ron Hubbard, but in my edition there was this little gem of a short story called Borrowed Glory.
Both heartbreaking and chilling, it remains the best short story I've read. Definitely keep an eye open for it at used book...
I'm with you Wabbit.
I'm a relatively slow reader I guess, so books tend to eat up a lot of my time. If I find I don't care about the characters or story by around page 100, I move on.
I have just given up after 112 pages.
I do not find this novel "brilliant", "hilarious" or the least bit interesting. I find it a more annoying read than anything else.
Guess I'm missing the joke. Pulitzer???
moving on...
I can't even remember the last time a "horror" novel actually frightened me.
I'm with Sally: the only times I've really been frightened have been from psychological suspense novels.
The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid is a classic example. The killer in this was very believable and I...
I read Wizard's First Rule and Stone of Tears.
I thought the story was great, the magic was very interesting and not a cheap plot device, and the sex and violence just made the story that much more enthralling.
However, the romance between Richard and Kahlan was getting to the point of...
I've only read Wicked (the Oz one) and have to admit I was disappointed.
Given the playground Maquire had to work with, I thought he kind of dried up the story with politics and the differences between animals and Animals. There were certainly interesting aspects to the story but frankly I...
Even if his novels are hit-and-miss, I think Dan Simmons' prose is the best out there.
Clive Barker can be simply amazing (Imajica)
Thomas Harris was a favorite, until Hannibal....
Greg Iles is a wonderful writer, check out Mortal Fear.
Orson Scott Card, for Treason and Ender's Game...
Last month I finished Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser. If I ever eat another McDonald's burger, it will be with deep regret.
I'm sure most of you have heard of this book. I don't read much non-fiction as I tend to get bored, but this was fascinating and quite well-written.
Not only is it...
I hated giving up on it, but I did after about 600 pages in the first book. It was around then that I was beginning to question my willingness to trudge through another pedicted 6000 pages of the series.
I am a relatively slow reader, so I value what little reading time I have. I decided to...
Necroscope - Brian Lumley
OK, it's horror but really does blend into the sci-fi/fantasy mix. Kinda.
Too bad there's no Horror forum in here *hint hint*
Along Came a Spider was OK but it was much too similar to another (and superior) novel I had read before it. I can't tell you the name because that would spoil it.
Kiss the Girls was excellent and I very highly recommend it!
Jack and Jill I thought was one of the worst novels I had read...
I let a pretty good snort out in a bookstore when I read this opening to Minette Walters' The Ice House:
"Fred Phillips is running."
Anne Cattrell's remark burst upon the silence of that afternoon like a fart at a vicar's tea-party.
:D
Thanks for the recs!
funes, I missed your post before I went shopping. Fried Green Tomatoes was the first one I saw so that's the winner. Ell, I was flipping through it and I think she is really going to like it. Thank you.
I'll keep the others in mind for her birthday...thanks all, and...
