I've read Surfacing, The Blind Assassin, The Handmaid's Tale, and Oryx and Crake.
For someone who hasn't read any Atwood, I would recommend The Handmaid's Tale. It's one of her most well-known books and in my experience, most people I've talked to enjoy it immensly.
He loved Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. I think it's more of an issue of finding what he likes.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll definitely be looking into them.
It's his birthday next month and I'm always trying to give him books as gifts. Thing is, he's not much of a reader at this point. He's busy with school reading and other homework much of the time, so there's not much of a foundation for reading for pleasure. I have very little to draw from...
I had no idea this was an Oprah book. Kind of glad I didn't know that beforehand.
Although the subject matter was bleak, I found the style of The Road to be refreshing. Stylistically, McCarthy is different from any other author I'm familiar with.
The story itself was hard to swallow...
I use a similar website, www.bookswim.com.
It's very similar to netflix. You can have anywhere from two to eleven books out at a time, depending on your monthly plan. You get your books, read them, and send them back. If you have two book at a time plan, you have to send both books back...
I have so many books to read that I can't fathom, at this point, re-reading a book. I already feel that there's no enough time to get to all the books I want to read. I have re-read books before though. In fact, I used to do it quite a bit. Some of my favorite books, such as Helter Skelter...
I get my books from a website called bookswim, which is a netflix type rental site for books. You pay a set fee a month depending on how many books you want to be able to have at a time. They get shipped to you, you read them, then send them back in a provided envelope. You can keep them as long...
I subscribe to Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Glamour, People, and US Weekly. I also get the New York Times on Sundays.
I read the Columbus Dispatch, my local paper, almost daily, and I'm liable to buy In Touch, Life & Style, and Star. I also buy wedding magazines quite a bit.
I have a big basket in my living room where I let them pile up. Once they start piling over, I recycle a bunch of them. I also tend to give my magazines away, either to family members or people at work. I read my magazines almost as soon as I get them, so I don't usually have any lying about...
Same here--I've thrown away books due to mold. My basement flooded and I had quite a few books suffer the consequences.
I wouldn't throw away books otherwise. Even if I thought they were horrible. Depending on what the book was and why I didn't like it, I'd either keep it, sell it, or...
I have about three hundred books on my TRL at the moment. I guess I should feel overwhelmed but I'm more frustrated with the fact that I can only read so fast. I want to read them all this minute. :p
I think reading in general is practically obsolete as a form of entertainment compared to what it used to be. With the invention of radios, televisions, computers, etc., a great number of people no longer read for enjoyment anymore.
I read an article in my local paper recently and I can't...
