Who is your favorite fictional character and why?

I actually was thinking about mentioning D'Anconia or whatever the dude's name was from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. John Galt can suck it for all I care. Rearden was a pretty cool dude, but not nearly as cool as D'Anconia. The pirate was cool, but lacked a part in the book. Other than that...

    Organizing your books

I prefer to have my books simply arranged in "read" and "non-read." That's about it. I like having books that are in a series together, but that's about it. The randomness is more enjoyable. It just keeps me on my toes.

    Fantasty genre dead?

I suggest reading some different fantasy authors. Michael Ende, Peter S. Beagle, Kathryn Wesley, etc. Just find different people than the ones you normally read. Or, read a series that never ends like Dragonlance, Star Wars, or something else. Or, just do what I do: don't read fantasy anymore.

    Construction of your personal library?

http://www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Hidden-Door-Bookshelf Interesting site that describes how to build your own bookshelf with a hidden door behind it. It was a dream as a little boy to have something like this. I know there are also sites on how to build a bookshelf out of books. That would...

Why are US book cover designs so poor?

It's interesting that a lot of people have expressed the opinion that the UK covers are more simplistic. It seems as though the examples presented (save the last one), the UK covers are filled with clutter. Also, have you ever considered the Harry Potter series? I think the US covers are much...

How possessive are you about your books?

It doesn't really matter how people treat my books. As long as they return them, it's fine. I'm perfectly fine if people dog-ear or bed the cover and stuff. It's just a book. No matter how much you love the book, unless it's a rare book, you shouldn't really care that much. I'm perfectly...

What you can do with a book besides reading it

I have used some old abandoned text books for safes. It's really easy. All it takes is a knife, some glue and some water. It's a lot of fun. You can usually find some outdated book like "The American Medical Guide to Ear Infections 8th Edition," or something of the like. Here's another...

HELP!!! Looking for this book all year...

The name of the book is The Dark is Rising. It's by Susan Cooper. It's part of the Dark is Rising series. They're actually coming out with a movie about the book. It's going to be called "The Sign Seeker" or something like that. I'm actually rereading this series myself.

    The Counterculture Canon

I'm well aware of all the speculation around the legitimacy of the author. Wikipedia didn't really open any new doors for me in that regard. Another question is easily posed: Why is it, if fiction, that it isn't counter-culture? What difference does that make?

    The Counterculture Canon

I think another thing to understand is not WHAT Thompson wrote about, but how he wrote it. Gonzo journalism is a relatively new and novel idea, and 95% of journalists still would never do it. He didn't just write a story, he LIVED it. He was a catalyst in quite a few cases. When he was...

What is the big deal about Snape's fear anyway? Where does it come into play in the books?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Discussion *Spoiler Alert*

That may be true. Actually, it probably is true. But Dumbledore did NOT know that he was going to be killed. Even Rowling cannot pretend he did. Unless she stretches the story WAY too much. Snape was at one time evil, and may have changed sides. But people are downplaying his murder. He...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Discussion *Spoiler Alert*

Carnahan, Snape still killed an old, weak, defenseless man. Crippled hand only makes it worse. I'm not saying that Snape is ALL evil. I'm just saying that it bugs me that people are so hell-bent on him being good. He had good intentions. The road to hell is paved with them. Anyway. I...

    Backpacking

Does anyone here backpack? Camp? Climb? Just curious. I am an avid backpacker, and have been looking for a good backpacking forum. I found this forum instead though, and was very excited since I am also an avid reader.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Discussion *Spoiler Alert*

I'm along on the "Snape is DEFINITELY NOT Harry's father" vein. Seriously people. That's the worst theory I've ever heard. Well, okay, the Ron-Dumbledore theory is up there too. Seriously. That's soap opera and WB material. Not even Rowling is that crappy of an author. Because let's...

Shadowlands is incredible! I loved it when I read it. There's a movie based on it too.
