    Favourite lines from a book

"Did people leave you, did their spirits simply take off, because you wouldn't read a book that turned them on? He now knew the answer was yes." ~Alice Walker The Temple of My Familiar "I dunno. They open doors inside of me. It's as if they're keys. To rooms inside myself. I find a door...

    Reading bestsellers

What I think is patronizing is when someone goes out of their way to call people who do don't like something elitist, or call them patronizing because they don't like something that everyone else likes.

    Reading bestsellers

I don't read a lot of bestsellers, I don't pay attention to the NYT list because it's calculated by books purchased from publishers, not what people in stores are reading (which is why some books are bestsellers before they're even published) Once in a while I might pick one up and be...

Alice Walker: The Temple Of My Familiar

I'm making my way through this one for a second time. Out of all of Walker's works this one was the hardest for me to get into. I tried 3 times before I was able to read it the first time. I just finished The Color Purple, and Possessing the Secret of Joy. Temple takes place somewhere...

Harry Potter Seventh Book Pre-Sales Speculations and Discussions

i hope it's not that long. She needs an editor, not free reign to write an overly long book.

    so what the big deal

I was a fan of the first 3 books. I think 4 and 5 could has seriously used an editor. 6 was okay. I'm also in the minority in thinking that 4 made a MUCH MUCH better movie. I pretty much hated the 4th book, and everything they cut out of it to make the movie were all the things about the...

    Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Scarlet Letter

yeah, stay far far away from the movie. I enjoyed the book when I had to read it in high school. I recently bought another copy and plan on rereading it. I may start it once I finish the book I'm reading now.

    L. Frank Baum: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I'm not sure about the musical, because I just don't understand how they could take a book as bad, and as boring as Wicked and make it something to sing to.

    L. Frank Baum: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I have a 2 volume collection of the Oz books. I've only read like 4 of them, but I enjoy them a lot. They're quick reads, but Baum did a good job of created a new world. It's also interesting to see how the book and the movie compare to each other, and how much stuff was left out, and...

    Strip Covers

because it costs a lot to ship them back, and most places have to return them for credit. stripping and throwing them away is the most economical way of doing that. If you had to ship them back, usually the cost of shipping would eat up whatever credit you were going to get, and the publisher...

    Suspense/Thriller novels written by women?

if you're looking for something that's a little less "bestseller list" try Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Her book Lady Audley's Secret is excellent. I just started on another of hers. It's Victorican Sensation Fiction. If you like Wilkie Collins you'd love her. The of course there's always Daphne...
