Choderlos de Laclos - Les Liaisons Dangereuses
I wasn't sure whether I would like it because its written in form of letters and thus a bit unusual for me. I couldn't quite imagine how this would work out, but it is great. I'm only a few pages in but I already have a good impression of the...
Oh yes, availability is a good point, Zolipara.
When I'm interested in for example Spanish and Russian books there often is a German translation but no English one. With most English books I have the choice, because they are often translated.
Another thing I noticed is that I can't easily...
There are so many bad translations around - I recently stumbled over the term 'sonnenblumenviolett' in a book: sun flower violet.
I try to read as much in its original language as possible, especially when it comes to poetry or books with very unique style. It can be a very...
This is just such a great idea, Kook. :)
I never tried King and I'm not very fond of Mr. Brown's writing either, but I do enjoy the Harry Potter books a lot and will pick up the next book, too.
There are also many fantasy books I liked. I also remember reading and enjoying many books by...
In no specific order:
The Smiths - Cemetry Gates
Eskobar feat. Heather Nova - Someone New
Björk - Possibly Maybe
But these lists change a lot for me, so many great artists out there yet to discover..
Gosh, you just love structuring your posts and researching, don't you?
The book got my attention by the beautiful cover art of the German edition:
But one shouldn't judge a book by its cover. ;) I heard so many good things about it and the book couldn't hold up to my high...
I'm interested in Paul Auster and have "The New York Trilogy" and "The Book of Illusions" on my shelf. So, which one would you recommend to be read first to get into Auster?
I think, Pillip Vandenberg is German. Or, at least, he lives here.
In comparison, this are the German best sellers:
FICTION
1. (1) Joanne K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Bloomsbury
2. (2) Dan Brown - Sakrileg Lübbe
3. (3) Dan Brown - Diabolus Lübbe...
I just finished reading "Bertolt Brecht: Der gute Mensch von Sezuan (The good person of Sezchuan)", which was a very interesting read. Three gods looking for one good person in the world, who doesn't live in an inhumane way. They seem to find this person in the prostitute Shen Te, but how long...
I always thought that the Canadian bestseller list would look it bit different - not so much like the US bestseller list, thinking about how much great music comes form Canada.
Anyway, I like that Dai Sijie is on the list. There aren't many non-anglo authors who are succesful outside their own...
Good descision. :)
I can't think of such a nice comparison, so all I say is, that this is one of my favourite books - I read it in about 2 days, it's gripping and the characters are very memorable.
I know what you are talking about concerning your English. I'm regularly struggling for words.. :( ..but I think you got it quite right with your description. That was what astonished me the most while reading her play.
I think I will get a German edition featuring all her plays, just...
Having a look around amazon.com and amazon.co.uk, it seems that this novel is hardly known outside the German-speaking countries, which it doesn't deserve.
The novel starts out in a Swiss prison, where the main character, the American White, is accused of being the missing Anatol Stiller, a...
Yesterday evening I read "Blasted". I didn't know what to expect because I hadn't heard about it before. I was shocked! It is very violent and disturbing, showing all kinds of things I rather don't want to imagine. The play didn't leave the impression of horror with me, though. Beyond the...
I loved Kafka (The Metamorphosis), Lessing (Emilia Galotti) and Sophocles (Antigone) at school, but we had a really good teacher at that time. Another favourite is "Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts" (Memoirs of a good-for-nothing) by Eichendorff and his poetry, too.
It's hard to pick a book...
