Well, but in order to get anywhere, we have to drive forward with some idea, not caring whether it is right or wrong. But is there such thing as right or wrong anymore in this world? I guess that's where moral absolutism and relativism comes into play, and that's a whole different discussion...
Yes, you are right, motokid, that's exactly what i was thinking. I can't help questioning everything that I do, though, and am always thinking whether something I do is really worth it. I think that it's a weakness, because if I do that, I can't really accomplish anything. I thought this forum...
There's no need for calling me a retard and all that. I'm simply thinking out loud, and you guys are shutting me down like I have nothing better to do than sit around forums and annoy people. See, maybe you, novella, are showing willful ignorance right now, since you denounce my point and do not...
Why, isn't it? If I read about politics, studied it from the inside out, listen daily to the news about the new decisions our politicians make, but had no real involvement in politics, except a vote which is so small of a fraction of a percentage, what have I really achieved? How can I apply my...
Well, if you've never thought about it and it doesn't concern you, why read about it? Isn't it a waste of time? Because knowledge in itself is useless, but knowledge that is applied can lead to something.
Who says you have to know about all those lofty ideas that don't concern you? By reading...
Mine is by a felow called Andrew R. MacAndrew, but I'm only reading it because it's the only translation our library has next to Constance Garnett. I think they have the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation in B&N, you can try that. Tell me how it goes.
What do you guys think is better, reading or thinking for yourself and coming with your own conclusions about life? In my opinion, reading too much forces you to absorb other people's opinions about life, and kind of makes you the author's mouthpiece. From a different perspective though, books...
Captain Michalis is about the Turkish rule in Crete, and about two close friends, one a christian Crete, other a muslin Turk, who grew up together, but now after many years become bitter enemies. I haven't heard of it anywhere in America, and was wondering if it was popular in Russia. Here's an...
What do you mean we, Rustam, do you mean you and your friends or the whole russian generation in general? I have Master and Margarita on my shelf as well as Heart of a Dog on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I'm too busy reading Captain Michalis by Nikos Kasandsakis, a...
I didn't like that book, only because in my opinion it didn't have much substance. I like books that delve into the character and show precisely what he's thinking, and this book wasn't like this. It's more of a book for kids in my opinion, and it's message about racism gets repeated constantly...
I have just finished reading Wide Sargasso Sea by her for English class as an extension of Jane Eyre, and liked it a lot better than Jane Eyre. I have also noticed that Rhys has written some other very interesting books, maybe even more interesting than Wide Sargasso Sea. Has anyone read...
It's interesting that you mention Bulgakov because I thought that he is not that popular in Russia. I thought he'd be more popular overseas since he mocks the Stalinist Era. I have read some stories by Pushkin too, and really like them, his poetry just seems so natural and beautifull. However...
This book was very interesting to me. I read it in an afternoon. If you know a good amount about the Russian Revolution, you can see different characters from the book mirror the characters from the actual event. It brings a good point as to why revolutions are garbage, same with the book 1984.
9th grade is kinda early, but for Russians it's easier since they can relate more to the novel. If a russian picked up a book such as To Kill a Mockingbird, or Huckeberry Finn, he would have a hard time understanding what it's about, but kids in America read it in middle schools. And I don't...
I currently wrestle in high school, and my wrestling coach, knowing that I like reading, offered me this book to read. It's basically about a aspiring wrestler that all of a sudden quit college and now works in construction. He gets an offer to be an assistant coach at a starting wrestling...
This was exactly the case with me when I was little. When I came here and was little and didn't know any english, books helped me learn it, and I couldn't have accomplished this without a library. We had some kind of an old Command Line Interface search catalog, and I was proud because I was the...
They have a special edition of Hamlet, where each chapter is summarized, and on every page, all the hard words are explained. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/074347712X/qid=1106351204/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-9236479-9891255
