Well cool, if it's not too late then I guess I will pick this up next chance I get. I'll probably swing by the library on Friday on my way home from work to drop off some books and pick up the holds waiting for me, so I might as well grab it then and try to get to it soon :)
Aw, I didn't vote but I had intended to read this and discuss it in here. I blame all the books that I had on hold at the library finally coming in... I feel pressed to finish them before they're due!
I just finished this book. I agree that the story is one that is inspiring, touching, powerful. The courage and drive that this man has is astounding.
But I have to say that the book itself (that is, the writing) was average. It wasn't written by Mortenson himself, but rather by a journalist...
Body Surfing, by Anita Shreve
Light on Snow, by Anita Shreve
Suddenly, by Barbara Delinsky
Moral Disorder, by Margaret Atwood [audio book]
Accordion Crimes, by E. Annie Proulx
Lowboy, by John Wray
It may help you to do that, but keep in mind that the intended audience for these books wasn't exactly familiar with modern biology or genetic theory, either ;-)
Then again I haven't read Darwin so maybe I shouldn't comment... :whistling:
I was a lifeguard once... I hated it. Most of my energy was spent yelling at people to quit running, quit horsing around, quit breaking the waterpark's rules...
(And the grown-ups were the worst. Somehow they all thought they were above needing to follow the rules!)
I had a different job...
They're in the sun in the afternoon, until the sun hides behind the building on the other side of the street. Tons of buds, though, and big orange blossoms all over. A few fuzzy miniature vegetables, even. I pinched off the yellow leaves and the plants seem pretty happy with that. Guess I'm just...
Can't imagine how frustrating that's got to be. :( Would it help if you had a designated spot to read without a lot of stuff around, or classical music playing in the background? Hope that doesn't sound condescending, it's just what I've heard can help. Don't give up on the meds, I hope you...
I spend the day driving home from NY, where my brother's fiancee had her bridal shower yesterday. It was nice to see family and friends, but I feel like I spent more time in the car each way than I did at their house. Ah well. Party was fun and the weather was fantastic, guess I can't complain ;-)
I have two tiny little green tomatoes :-D Nothing else has budded yet, but a lot of my veggie plants have blossoms now, so it's only a matter of time.
Question for those who know what they're doing (because seriously, I don't! lol): Is it normal for some of the leaves on my potted zucchini &...
Does he EVER. I tried and tried to give him enough exercise, but walks and playing aren't enough. Even after 2 hours at the dog park, he would take a nap and be ready for more. That's why we started taking him to doggie day care. It's a godsend, he comes home exhausted!
Sophie sounds cute :)...
I'm a Browser, with some Seeker and some Independent tendencies. Also a former Student (finally done, woo hoo).
Don't hate on the students. If you lived in an 8x15-foot-room with a smelly roommate whose sleeping habits are opposite of yours, you'd camp out somewhere else, too ;-)
Thanks! He's a good dog, doesn't ever chew anything that he's not supposed to (except for the one time we tried leaving him un-crated when we left for work, then he chewed an area rug, a wicker basket, and a bicycle brake cable).
And holy crap that's a lot of bread! I missed the post where...
I do a mixture. I edit as much as I can on the screen, but then I print out a copy and attack it with a pen. I can usually find plenty more things to change once I'm looking at a hard copy. But I wouldn't necessarily call it a "rough draft," since I never just write without editing and tweaking...
I gave up on Shadow Country by Peter Matthiessen. I just couldn't get into it. I took it with me to the airport and spent hours upon hours reading it, but it was slow going. This week, I finally called it quits at 340 pages (out of 900ish), and this is the first book that I can remember giving...
