Thanks for the comments. Yeah, if you query for Vampire stories... there are a TON! Sparkly, lovable vampires everywhere now-a-days. :) For my current novel, I'm trying to decide whether to start with the scene I posted above, or another, so these comments are helpful!

George R.R. Martin's books are technically classified as fantasy, but I think of it as more "alternate history." There's very little actual magic in them.
Probably not. Mostly I don't pay attention, but if someone with seriously questionable morals (a sexual predator, for instance) were to write a novel, I'm not likely to spend money on it.
The Elements of Style has a special place right beside my keyboard!
I also love Immediate Fiction by Jerry Cleaver, and Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight Swain.
This is why I love my Kindle so much. I can download a sample and read before deciding to buy. If I'm not hooked by the time I get to the end of the sample, it's not for me. Sometimes I don't get past the opening paragraph!

I'd started reading American Gods, but I didn't like Neil Gaiman's writing style. It grated on me. I might see if I can read the opening of Neverwhere and see if it reads better in my head. :)
