I'm a fantasy writer, and I look up to writers like GRR Martin and Guy Gavriel Kay. But I was writing for years before I read them. There wasn't really a particular author who inspired me specifically to write. Madeline L'Engle inspired my imagination to work overtime, though.
Who are your favorite new authors - by which I mean authors who have only just started publishing in the last five to ten (at the most) years? What fresh faces would you recommend to readers stuck in an author rut? Who has the most potential? On the other hand, what new authors have you found...

I've gotten a lot of recommendations from it, myself, especially in the conceptual scifi genres.
I enjoy getting my favorite tv shows on DVD. It used to be that tv shows were rarely put up for sale because VHS was so bulky. The size of the DVD has really revolutionized the availablity of television
Hmm... that's one I hadn't thought of. Falling asleep. I'm not sure if i've ever fallen asleep at a movie theatre, but I've certainl falling asleep watching movies on the couch at home.
I've heard good things about Arrested Development, and I've been meaning to check it out. That is, if I can find a way to rent or borrow the first season.
The current trend seems to be collecting DVDs. Do you buy them? If so, why? Do you get them just to have a large collection? Do you own just your favorites in film and tv that you would watch again? What have DVDs added to the film industry? Are they an improvement over VHS, or just another...
Among more recent "classics" I found Solzhenitsyn's Ivan Denisovich to be particularly intriguing. It was one of the books I was required to read for school, but surprised me that I actually ended up liking it.
1984 certainly is a classic. It recently placed 3rd on our SF Novels list. I never got around to reading it, though. Oddly enough, all my years of schooling kept me away from reading, or at least kept me limited to reading for assignments. I'm trying to catch up now.
What are the classic novels and stories that everyone ought to read? Those essentials for any good literature fan? What are the literary classics you would name as prerequisites for enjoying literature today? What are the essential classics of general literature, and what are the genre-specific...
Is there any particular writer that you would ask a specific question of? I know you probably have a lot of favorites. But would you ask different questions of some writers but not others?
