My neighbor's dogs. They're in the house but the windows are open, and the dogs bark at anything and everything. "Ooooh look! A leaf is falling! Let's bark at it!"
I liked them both. I don't remember much about the differences between the two, except for the ending.
There really was no reason to publish the original/extended version. Nothing important was added to the story or to character development. It was fun to read though, to try and figure out...
I love being asked for my opinion! :D
Where do you buy the majority of your books from?
***Internet -- Amazon, 100%
Do you regularly order?
*** Yes. Two or three a month, sometimes more.
How long would you expect to wait when you order?
*** 5-7 days. I'm never in a big hurry...
I did that for awhile, but I ended up buying more than I really wanted just to get the free shipping. I finally broke down and signed up for Amazon Prime. $80 a year, no shipping charges, and the book ships within two days. So now if I want just one paperback, I only buy one paperback...
If you do, beware -- my copy of the second book (Before They Are Hanged) is missing about 20 pages. Anyone buying the paperback should look at page 382 and see if page 383 is next, not 415 like mine.
That's a first for me. I've bought hundreds of books, including small press offerings...
I didn't say that very well. :) I thought that fantasy was juvenile. You're right, I probably got that idea from Saturday morning cartoons. And I'd see kids reading Conan and D&D paperbacks.
I don't remember ever seeing a fantasy title in the bookstores where I shopped -- this would have...
I started reading fantasy after a friend loaned me The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.
The only fantasy I'd read before that was A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. But I didn't read Games because it was fantasy: I read it because Martin's always been one of my favorite writers...
I asked over at the Shocklines board. Two members responded -- both of them think it's On That Dark Night by Carol Beach York.
Let me know if that's the one, and I'll make sure to thank them. (Those guys are good!)
I'm not real happy with Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America 1789-1989 by Michael Beschloss.
It's his style -- he meanders and teases too much before getting to the point. I'd rather he start with the point and then go back and describe what happened. Some of the...
Based on what you like, I think The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie would work for you. It's realistic fantasy (as much as there is such a thing). There are enough characters to keep the story interesting but not so many that you need to make a list and take notes. The characters are...
That article is an opinion piece from a Republican senator. It's not unbiased.
From an AP report dated 9/10/08: "Palin has sought $197 million worth of earmarks for 2009, down about 25 percent from the $256 million she sought in the 2008 budget year. As mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska, she...
An explosion in New Jersey destroys a neighborhood and leaves fallout that causes grotesque mutations. Twenty-plus years later, Freaks and Normals still haven't accommodated to each other, and the rest of the world is dealing with carcinogenic rain and most food isn't safe to eat.
There are...
Anyone else reading these books? The titles are The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged and The Last Argument of Kings.
I almost didn't finish the first book. Joe takes his own sweet time setting things up and introducing characters. You don't even get a sense of the plot until near the...
Here's a more balanced article about the bill -- Media Matters - Quoting Kincaid, Limbaugh falsely asserted Obama bill "would commit the United States to spending 0.7 percent of GDP on foreign aid"
Personally, I think it's in our best interests to address poverty everywhere. People who are...
A hearty second for Out Stealing Horses.
Another good one is Kristin Lavrandsdatter by Sigrid Undsett. I think it won a Pulitzer or Nobel -- one of those big prizes. Not that awards are always deserved, but this one is. I've read a lot of historical novels, but this is one that felt...
If you find some, let me know. I like monsters too.
Since you like werewolves, have you tried Donna Boyd? Two of her books are historical fiction with werewolves -- The Passion and The Promise. There's a love story, but the books aren't romancey.
A classic shape-changer/werewolf book is...
