An explosion in New Jersey destroys a neighborhood and leaves fallout that causes grotesque mutations. Twenty-plus years later, Freaks and Normals still haven't accommodated to each other, and the rest of the world is dealing with carcinogenic rain and most food isn't safe to eat.
There are a couple things going on in the story. The main story is the relationship between Grinner (who has scales and gills and gets high on salt) and his girlfriend Reeni (who is furry). Grinner and Reeni do sex shows to earn money for a surgical procedure that will make them look normal.
Grinner's brother breeds tropical fish. The eggs from the fish are the latest drug. They make you dead for a few hours.
The other story is what caused the explosion. Of course, it was a government experiment gone wrong.
Tension develops when Reeni decides she'd rather accept herself for who she is than undergo the surgery.
I recommend the book, even though it's a bit depressing.
