Nuts. Late again.
Anyway...
Horror isn't quite as 'commercial' as it may have once been, and less and less books seem to appear on the shelves with each passing year (well apart from some of the big names such as King, Clive Barker, Anne Rice). The Horror Writers of America did post a...
Read this one last year. I thought it provided a reasonable overview of the Roman republic though it does turn out to be a bit of a dry read in places (but then again I've always preferred reading about tyrants and conquerors eg Sulla rather than philosophers and great thinkers).
I'd say it's a good book, and worth having a read through if you haven't already. Different people read it on different levels (eg http://forums.thebookforum.com/showthread.php?t=1048), but most people come away from the book having enjoyed it.
Well I could say the aliens were performing experiments, but you'd never believe me. So I'll just have to stick with the old work excuse.
Nice avatar by the way - now that takes me back.
Coming out of lurker mode
Oh this is getting annoying - thebookforum ate my last 2 attempts to post
Anyway...
I was already a member/mod of another forum specialising in books of the Fantasy/SF/Horror genres. At the time (though not anymore) other genres including non-fiction were...
Necroscope - Lumley
There are some good ideas in here but the author does go off on tangents. Some of it is just gratuitous for the sake of it without adding to the atmosphere. Not bad if all you want is a pulpy horror read.

Finally got around to reading Ender's...
I'm not a great fan of Harry Turtledove's work myself.
I'd have a look at (though they're not for everybody):
Keith Robert's Pavane
P.K. Dick's Man in the High Castle
Works which are alright, but contain a significant number of flaws include Robinson's Years of Rice and Salt...
Finished [b]Vernon God Little[b] - DBC Pierre. Different use of language, and some good concepts with regards to 'fate tunes' and the 'spiritual knife'. It's alright, but I was expecting something more.
Oh forgot to mention another point earlier...
When buying books, there are certain 'must have' books, or books that grab you from the first paragraph/page. However there are quite a few books out there that I'm not sure about, or have several conflicting reviews from different sources. For me...
I was always under the impression that Shakespeare was meant to be watched, not read. I'd go and find one of the movie versions that hasn't taken too much 'artistic license' with the material.
Don't worry - Hamlet's not too bad once you come to grips with the basic plot. Try not to...
I'm about halfway through the book, and to be honest I'm not entirely convinced it's as good as it's made out to be. Granted, it has moments where the author's sense of humour shines through, but it all just seems a tad surreal (though I guess that's intentional). The way it's written shows...
Well I both buy books and borrow from the library. If I really liked a book I read from the library I tend to want to purchase my own copy to: a) lend out and b) ready to read again at a later date.
As to why buy rather than use the library:
1) 3 weeks to read a book before you need to...
Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts
Has anyone read this novel yet? I had a read of the first few pages on amazon and I must say I was quite enjoying it. Hopefully one to rival Eugenides' Middlesex. I've put a pre-order in for the paperback version due out in March.
Well Dave Pelzer's A Child Called It is about the same length as Animal Farm, so didn't take much time to read through. In a short space of time you are told of a child drowned, gassed, burned, starved, humiliated and broken. Not pleasant reading. Despite the importance of the subject material...
Technically he writes historical fiction. Has anyone read any of his work?
He's written the following:
Gabriel's Story
Walk Through Darkness
Pride of Carthage
I'm just asking as my little brother's given me a hefty looking tome called 'Pride of Carthage' (after getting fed up of me...
