I bought all of these at a used bookstore except for the last, which is a new release.
My Only Story - Monica Wood
Durable Goods - Elizabeth Berg
The Way the Crow Flies - Ann-Marie MacDonald
The King of Lies - John Hart
Lindsay's only written the two Dexter books so far. I've always had a problem reading books featuring killers as protagonists. I've tried and failed to enjoy Barry Eisler's supposedly excellent 'Rain' series, as well as Lawrence Block's Hit Man. Somehow Lindsay succeeded (at least with me)...
Jeff Lindsay has written two books about Dexter Morgan, who is a cold, logical blood-splatter specialist for the police department as well as a serial killer in his spare time. The twist is that Dexter follows the advice his policeman foster father gave him shortly before he died: he murders...
I don’t often read horror books, but I have read some of both the Anita Blake series as well as a few of Anne Rice’s books. Both series quickly became unreadable to me (though in the long run I liked Rice's writing better). But then one of my favorite new writers came out with a novel that...
Finished in February:
'Killer Swell' by Jeff Shelby
'The Turtle Warrior' by Mary Ellis
'The Two Minute Rule' by Robert Crais
'Flashback' by Gary Braver
'Bad Move' by Linwood Barclay
'Solomon Vs. Lord' by Paul Levine
'In the Country of the Young' by Lisa Carey
Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity... we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access...
Do miniseries count? If so, my favorite book > movie would be Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Oh, and recently, Brokeback Mountain, from the short story by Annie Proulx.
Books I finished in January:
"Through Violet Eyes" by Stephen Woodworth
"Panic" by Jeff Abbott
"Speak of the Devil" by Richard Hawke
"Ordinary Heroes" by Scott Turow
"When the Bough Breaks" by Jonathan Kellerman
"Memory In Death" by J.D. Robb
Book I started but didn't finish:
"The...
I second the Lee Child recommendation.
Perhaps you could get him a few different "first books" in various series. That way if he likes one you'll have a ready-made list of other books to get him by the same author. I would recommend these:
"Deal Breaker" by Harlan Coben
"The Monkey's...
I was into Christian fiction and romances a few years ago. One of my favorite romance writers was Lori Wick. I enjoyed all the books by her that I read, so I would recommend anything by her.
One book that impressed me was Voice In the Wind by Francine Rivers. It's an historical Christian...
I prefer paper books that I can hold, but I do read small amounts of text on my PDA. I signed up for sample chapters of books from my local library and bits are emailed to me daily. I download these onto my PDA and read them at my leisure. If I like it, I'll get the whole book to read. It's...
In no particular order:
Losing Julia – Jonathan Hull
The Memory of Love – Nicole Krauss
The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud – Ben Sherwood
The Ha-Ha – David King
The Memory of Running – Ron McLarty
Peace Like a River – Leif Enger
Six Bad Things – Charlie Huston
The Death...
Now you've read it, I can share this: I thought the weakest part of the book was the voodoo stuff near the end. I never really did understand what that whole part was about. On my reread, I conveniently skipped past it. The rest of the book was very enjoyable, though.
What did you think...
My secondary hobby is genealogy. It's fascinating to discover what some of my ancestors were up to. I've discovered a Civil War 'hero' who was court-martialed for going AWOL, two suicides, and two murderers in my family tree. :o I've also discovered a lot of other interesting people too...
I loved Kerley's sophomore novel The Death Collectors as well, and thought it was even better than the first. Got a chance to meet the author at a book signing and he discussed serial killer memorabilia, which is central to the plot of TDC. Fascinating subject, and he came off as a nice...
Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Jim Fusilli, Carol O’Connell, Jan Burke, Charlie Huston and Jack Kerley. The last two authors are new and only have two books each to their credit, but they’re among my favorite books and I will jump at any future books by these authors.
I remember being disappointed when Elvis Cole (of Robert Crais' wonderful P.I. series) broke down and acquired a cell phone. Crais wrote the greatest scenes when Elvis had to stop to use a pay phone. I miss them now.
I had read Outlander when it was first published, so was very happy to find out a sequel was being released (little did I know! ;)) I remember opening Dragonfly In Amber to read it for the first time, and receiving a great shock! Claire was now older, back in her own time, with a grown...
