I've enjoyed everything I've read by Bryson except his book about England. My favorite is The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got to be That Way. My second favorite is the book about Australia, and my third favorite is about the Appalachian Trail.
I read more non-fiction than fiction. Cussler's book The Sea Hunters was fascinating to me. It almost (but not quite) made me want to read some of his fiction.
This thread is one of the reasons I love having joined this forum. I looked through the threads for an author I recognized, and discovered a bunch of names of other books that I now have to find. I loved the Anne of Green Gables books. I listened to the Audiobook versions of the first three or...
This thread itself is a pretty good place to get to know some of you people. I joined just a few days ago, and I am still searching for threads about my favorite books and examining all the different catagories, so I haven't had much chance to see people's personalities. I was going to ask for a...
I get most of my "reading" from listening to audiobooks, and I listen to them partly for pleasure and partly to give myself something to occupy my mind during my hour-long ride to work each morning.
When I was in high school, we were assigned a different book each month, and were tested on it at the end of the month. I would read each book twice during the month, and then barely had to study for the multiple choice test. I do remember one month we were given the abridged version of A Tale...
Or maybe, so as not to make too much of a burden for someone, the discussion could go for two months at a time, which is still better than not having the discussion at all. I usually get the books I read at the library, so if it is a newer book, I wouldn't get it within the one-month time anyway.
I read the Alvin Maker series just last year. I loved it. My wife read the first book, Seventh Son, at the same time I was reading it, so we had a lot of good discussions.
I just joined today, so I went looking through old threads for my favorite Sci-Fi book. I was going to be really, really surprised if Ender's Game didn't have a thread.
I get Reader's Digest, Discover, American Heritage, Country, Country Woman,, TV Guide, Frontline (a Fundamental Baptist magazine), and Better Homes and Gardens. I also go to my Dad's house and grab his issues of Smithsonian and Scientific American. My favorites are Discover and American Heritage.
Actually, I think the author has stated that her intentions never were to make this a series of books for children. That is why they have gotten progressively darker as Harry Potter has grown older. Granted, they aren't that dark compared to other books, but my only point is that they weren't...
I read it for a book discussion group, and I was more interested in the fair storyline at first than the murders. Then at the end of the month, I was running out of time before my meeting, so I just skimmed to all the murder storyline sections.
Sure, I agree with you, but you could say the same about a lot of books that are written in a series. Seeing what happens next is a very valid reason for reading a book, in my opinion.
I just joined today, and I would probably be more interested in discussing a sci-fi book than I would the book in the main section. Let me (well, not me personally, but everyone) know what the book is. Has Ender's Game ever been discussed? (That's my favorite sci-fi book.)
I have read a number of the books in the Acorna series. I liked all of them. Actually, I listened to the audio version of them, but to me that counts as reading them. There were a number of days when I was listening on the way to work, and I wished my drive was longer than an hour, so I could...
