Whoops, i suggested it, but havn't been keeping up to date. :D This is a wonderful and highly original novel about a mentally challenged man named Charlie who wants to be smart. One day, his wish was granted. A group of scientists select him for an experimental operation which would to raise...
I read Poul Andersons Three Lions and three Lions last night too. It was good, but i didn't particularly empathise with any of the characters. It was refreshingly short and to the point thought, unlike Kushiel's Dart, which i finally finished this week. At first i thought it was very good, then...
Flowers from Algernon was made into a film called Charlie (Charly?). I'd never heard of it til i read the book, but it won oscars (best actor i think.)
Guess the basic premise isn't too dissimilar to lawnmower man - if you take out the technophobia and randomly amoral baddie :D
I'm not a huge of Hers either, but i liked the premise of Ash a lot. Thought the whole historical document thing was cool, although i've heard some people call it a conceit.
Not too sure about Tad Williams. I liked Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, but Otherland dragged on and on, and i've seen lots...
I'm reading Kushiel's Dart at the mo'. Left it on the shelf for ages because it sounded a bit romance-novel-like. But it definately doesnt corraspond to what i would call romantic - S&M sex torture may be an interesting read, but doesn't make me feel all warm inside.
Finished The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner last night. It's Very good. Can easily imagine the world becoming the kind of distopia he describes. So many of the predictions from the sixties have already come true too and the presidents speaches are scarily similar to G W Bush's.
(According to the...
The Last Herald-mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, Magic's Price i think).
It's sehr romantic, as long as you don't mind that the romance is between 2 men. The endings a bit of a weepy tho :(
Edit: D'oh, I think it's out of print in the UK
Someone mentioned that the Book of the Long Sun was very different to the New Sun. I would definately agree. I preferred Long Sun, the limited space of the stting made it less confusing for me, and many of the puzzles were a bit easier to work out. :)
So those that couldn't get into New sun...
Just remembered there were Retro hugos too. For 1954 books?
Farenheit 451 by R Bradbury won best novel
A Case of Conscience by J Blish won best novella
Earthman, Come Home by J Blish won best novellette
This is a nicer list, cos i've read them all :D
Farenheit 451 is very good...
Cool! Thanks :D
I've read Plague of Angels (a long time ago) and Dragonsbane, looks like a D&D wannabe from the cover, but i agree it is very different from the standard fare (and good too :D ) I really liked Hanbly's Darwath (sp?) trilogy too. Do you know if the sequel(s) to Dragonsbane...
Hi, not much going on on the board, and i'm skiving off work. So starting a thread:
Anyone got recomendations for good standalone fantasy books?
I've got loads of trilogy / saga / epic recomendations from here, but i don't have trouble finding them 'cos they're all lined up at the...
I thought this book was very good. Narrative was a bit simple, but it was from a child's perspctive, so made sense to me.
Speed of Dark, by Elizabeth Moon is written from the perspective of an autistic man. For me it dragged on a bit, and i was annoyed that the autistic characters were...
Hey, i like GRR Martin too, but don't you worry that the story might go all downhill? I guess i'm just too pessimistic :(
5 years ago i thought Robert Jordan was God's gift to fantasy, then his characters started annoying me with all their dithering - now i wish i'd never started the WoT...
I've got The Tales of the Dying Earth, but it's so big, that i havn't had time to read it :(
Might start by taking the individual stories in it, and intersperse with other books.
Am i the only one who thinks it's strange to have a top 5 of authors who have only written one (partial) series...
Illium is on my shelf - i've heard that it isn't a book that stands alone (i know it's one of 2, but sometimes you can read the first as a standalone.)
So i'm waiting for Olympus.
If it's near as good as hyperion it deserved to win something, but until i've read it's competitors i'll reserve...

I've somehow still managed to order the first 3 of song of ice and fire and the first 4 of Malazan book of the fallen. Will i be able to resist the temptation once they are all lined up on the shelf?
Finished Northern lights - it was good. i'll read the sequels soon(ish).
Currently on Swords and Deviltry, by Fritz Lieber and The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner.
Nearly finished the former, deciding between Midnights Children (Rushdie) and 100 years of solitude (Marquez).
Not a single book on my TBR list about Xmas.
But this sight may help others who are stumped.
