So far there are fewer "I don't want smilies" posts than "I do want smilies" posts. Not clear whether the people not taking part in the conversation are in favour, opposed, or indifferent.
Fine by me if the management decides not to add them, as long as we don't start down the road of "you may...
Carl Sagan said something very similar to this years ago in A Demon-Haunted World. I don't know if it's any more than speculation or even if it's a testable assertion, but at some level it seems to make sense. Humans more than other species have to do a lot of learning when they're young...
However, you have several people asking for more smilies. So, sure, go ahead and say, "no, we're not having them, I don't like them and my opinion is the one that matters." But it would be nice if that message came across without the added baggage that the people asking for smilies are lacking...
I've read the first Sano Ichiro book and really enjoyed it, but I don't have the second one yet. I've got some of the later ones but I don't know how important it is to read this lot in order.
I really enjoy reading about history, both fiction and nonfiction, so historical inaccuracies do bother me. I know it's sometimes necessary to the plot of a novel, but if it's just a case of ignorance or sloppiness on the part of the author, it detracts from the enjoyment of the book. If an...
I've just come across a recommendation for these books, and was wondering whether to get them. Judging from this thread, it seems as though I should. I used to read a lot of Tudor-based novels when I was a kid (a bit like Cooroo by the sound of it), and this series sounds really promising.
And since I can't edit the above post, I'll add this as another post and the mods can merge the posts if they want to.
There seems to be an attitude by some here that using smilies is in some way unworthy of people who are interested in the written word. Not everyone interested in reading and...
Well, when we're hearing about how desperate the Army is to find recruits and is lowering the standards required for entry, it's hardly surprising that some people will be pointing out that it's one of the last resorts for the under-educated.
And, yes, it's depressing to see the "dissent is...
I've read a lot of fantasy series, and I haven't found any that I'd characterise as WAAAAY better than the Harry Potter books. The more you read them, the more you realise how much depth there is to them.
I also try to collect all the books I can find by favourite authors. I think I've got all the books written by Richard Dawkins, Stephen Jay Gould, and Niles Eldredge, as well as everything by Terry Pratchett that's generally available. Pretty sure we have all the Douglas Adams books, as well as...
You'll be sparkchaser's best friend for life with a post like that.:D

I ran out of bookshelf space some time ago and have books piled up everywhere as well as on shelves. We had this wonderful notion to arrange the books alphabetically, but now we have bookshelves in the basement, in the living room, and in a couple of the spare bedrooms, it's been too much...
