I agree! Ruth Rendell aka Barbara Vine writes sophisticated suspsenseful mysteries especially as Barbara Vine. He novels are gritty, on the edge and highly challenging.

I was so disappointed in the new MIss Marple series on MASTERPIECE MYSTERY.
The books she stars in have become a close second to Poirot but this new MIss Marple is sadly miscast imo.
What do you all think? :confused:

I have read all of the books you mentioned in your post and agree that they are all excellent. Since you especially like Icelandic settings you might want to read LAST RITUALS by Yrsa Sigurdardottir and her newer one. I've only found 2 of hers.

Orphan i'm not sure but if you put teh line from the poem into the search engine won't it find the poem thru wikipedia or something?
I am absolutely not sure but it seems tht you should have some luck looking it up.
