I'm the opposite. If a character is entertaining enough, I'll follow him anywhere. If, however, a well-plotted book has cardboard-cutout characters I lose interest.
Language is a good one. I'm sorry I didn't think of it.
I definitely vote for character. I think that character is key, and if you have a good character than good plots and themes will follow as part of the package. After all, isn't that what makes a good character so engaging? You can't see whether it's a good character if you're watching them sit...
What, in your opinion, is the most important part of any story? Setting? Character? Events or Plot? Ideas of Concept? What keeps you reading or watching? Keeps you interested, engaged and coming back for more? Why?
It's really not. I didn't know what to expect when I got my first, and it took me a little while to get used to it. But since then I swear by them and get audiobooks from the library whenever there is a version available for the book I want to read. You'd be surprised how well you can listen. My...
The list was determined entirely by visitor votes. Our editors didn't weigh in at all. We just added up the votes. The results are at the mercy of who decides to participate. If you disagree with the results, I hope you'll consider participating in future lists to help get a more accurate...
Is has been over four months in the making, but at long last our Top Ten SF Novels list is done! I'd like, once again, to thank everyone on this page who contributed their votes, opinions, and feedback to this project. I hope you will find that the final list was worth your while. If you're...
I've been "reading" an audio book lately, to see what it's like. It's an excellent time-saver, since I can clean my apartment while I listen to it.
I'm curious as to why you consider e-books a "dumbing down"? They are still print books, after all. If anything they are more difficult to read...
Have you ever read an electronic novel? How did you take to the format? Was it tough not to have that paper book in your hands? Or was it easier than you expected? If you've never read an e-book, why haven't you? Would you ever consider it? Why or why not?
So, what do you think, will the popular sorts of characters (say from LOTR, Star Wars and Star Trek) be the ones to win out? Do characters from smaller books and movies have a chance?
Voting for our newest Top Ten list project, the Top Ten SF Characters, is officially open. Thanks again to everyone who helped out by submitting their vote toward our previous list. We're currently tabulating the results of that list, and I'll let you folks know as soon as the final list is...
Thanks to everyone who has already contributed their vote to our current Top Ten project, the Top Ten Speculative Fiction Novels of All Time. The deadline for votes is fast approaching. Voting will close on December 20th. If you would still like to contribute to this project by voting, please...
It's common to put down a book and never come back to it, but have you ever walked out of a movie? What was it that bored or bothered you about the film that prompted you to leave before it was over?
Best Characters? Worlds? Stories? ...?
I'd like to thank the members of this board once again for voting in our current Top Ten List, the Best Speculative Fiction Novels (there's still time to vote if you haven't yet...
Or want to? Was there ever a book that had a devastating plot twist? An infuriating storyline? A deviously shocking moment that it made you want to throw it across the room?
