Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year in 2018. :)
Including old timers whom we seldom see anymore.
If any stop by, it would be nice if they at least stuck their heads in to say hello.
And the New Year season has always seemed to me like a good time to do it.
But whenever.
Best to...
I Am Aged
I am aged, by common definition I suppose.
Steely grey hair, fringed 'round a bald pate,
Running to curls in back; I wish it were snowy white.
I get along with a cane, and take my Tylenol regularly,
arthritis is a bitch -- helped along internally now
By pacemaker and four...
Currently reading up on Pre Civil War American political history to gain a deeper understanding of what-all went into that national catastrophe --
-- two books specifically: a biography of Henry Clay, the Great Compromiser; and a collection of factual stories about the year's events of 1861.
Ever the skeptic, I think that only some of our souls on this planet want to be free, and then only parts of the souls of many of the rest of us.
I very much like the ways you have enumerated that freedom can be a liberating force in both hope and action.
But, sadly, I think that freedom also...
Good Evening Mr Travidian
Good Evening Mr. Travidian, sir.
Hello Michael. My table, please, for two.
Yes, sir. Your waiter will be right along.
Hello Jim. Tonight we'll have the steak a deux, please.
To begin, our usual martinis for each of us. Up.
Your steak will be right along, medium well...
Joshua Trees, Gold Butte, NV
Joshua trees, ancient Lords
of isolated desert corners,
Until some guy comes along
with scheming eyes to “reassess.”
It's just as well our lives are short,
to veil our eyes
against the rape to come.
THow Long Is An Era?
'Tis commonplace knowledge, 'specially 'mongst Octos, that
Memory improves with age, becomes sharper, clearer, as
Further backward in time events and ideas recede, until
They reach before the Llennials' time, who
Don't know them at all.
Thoughts once commonplace, but...
Jeffsi,
The single most absorbing espionage thriller I have read recently is I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. It is immensely interesting and suspenseful from end to end and I don't think you can go wrong with it.
Happy reading :)

On a random impulse, after long absence, I've just finished reading this thread back to page 27 out of the current 40 pages on my computer.
It has been fascinating to see all the familiar people again and what they once were reading. Hello all! :)
Also fascinating to see my own mentions of...
What you say is certainly correct. However, the more I see and think about the human condition here on Earth, the more I am convinced that almost any question of significance can be found already addressed in the Bible. There is a lot of truth in the assertion that 'there is nothing new under...
I think the book itself determines my reading speed.
Some novels (think Faulkner and Banville) attract my close attention, and get it.
Other novels deserve the fate of speed reading, and get it.
Even other books I will abandon part-way through, without regret; there are always other books...
I've just finished The Existential Café by Sarah Bakewell.
It is a readable historical narrative of the development of modern existential philosophy -- which makes an interesting story line for getting up to speed in the area.
Also, you might add Plato's Republic to the Aristotle already mentioned.
Soniya,
I have the feeling that the interaction you ask about has indeed declined over time on this forum.
But I haven't been scanning other forums lately, so I don't really know what others look like now either.
"Best" anymore? I wouldn't know.
I continue to read, and write, privately but lack...
