Armies of ants
Armies of ants thick as fur
swarming the baize of a billiard table
opaquely thick tangling legs mandibles
ascending one edge scrabbling forward
tumbling pushed from the further one
seemingly mindless flow of instinct will
not much different than
Hordes populations shin by jowl...
Thanks for an interesting list, especially the Sinclair. That 1907 panic/crash sent families of both my sets of grandparents back to Europe because times were too tough to earn a living in the US. They later came back and set down roots here for good.
Glad you enjoyed Andy Weir.
As for #6, I...
Thanks for the post, Jess, and welcome to the membership here.
There are all sorts of good reading here. And all sorts of bookworms, too. Never despair. :D
Thanks for your reply, Polly, adding to the very slim number who have taken the time this year.
Glad to see your recommendations, also; I have been on the fence about some of them.
Have a good new year. :)
It is great that you are having a hard decision between excellent books. :)
Glad that you had a wonderful reading year and I hope the new year goes well for you in all respects, reading and other.
Most sincerely
Peder
Bumped up. One day remaining to the year. During December, I added one more to my Best Reads Of 2014 :
Popularized Science: The Science of Interstellar by Kip Thorne. A readable intro to the imaginative time and space bending seen in the movie, Interstellar. See the movie, read the book...

Glad to see your recommendation for Tenth of December. It's in the pile here waiting its turn; now I'll bump it up. Thanks.
Still finishing Salinger here. Even at the halfway mark, it is clearly a best non-fiction read of 2014 for me. Couldn't resist listing it.
Looks like it is too...
Best Reads of 2014 - Peder
Literary Fiction: Stoner by John Williams. Life, Love and Death of Professor Bill Stoner. Excellent.
General fiction: The Time In Between by Maria Duenas. Tangier, Madrid, Lisbon, espionage.
Classics: Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. Glorious, glorious, glorious...
Yes, The Stories of Vladimir Nabokov doe have that story, as its very first one.
I haven't read many of his shorts, but I have enjoyed The Vane Sisters and Spring in Fialta.
Ah, you caught me in a (very) good month. So, since you asked:
6/1 Vanishing Act by Thomas Perry. V1 in Jane Whitehead series. Excellent, again.
6/4 The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares. Dreary, dreary, dreary.
6/9 Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. Glorious, glorious, glorious! Plot...
Perhaps one could run a poll to find out what kinds of books people here actually like to read, since so few books actually get any sort of discussion at all down in BOTM anymore. In addition, one might just also find out whether people here respond to polls any more, or not. Reading and...
Stiggy,
That's two where you humble me with your exquisite praise. I am thankful beyond description. It is certainly not the usual reaction -- and I have the poems to prove it. :D
Sometimes I am just in the mood, while my wife wonders where these morbid ideas come from. But she loves me...
