    Poetry

Here, in my humble opinion, is one of the greates poems EVER WRITTEN. It has some of the same moral point as Hamatreya, written with incredibly beautiful art and skillful imagery. It was published in 1818 so I think I'm pretty safe as far as public domain and copyright goes. Ozymandias -...

    Poetry

Yes - that passage is the highlight. If you come from a family of farmers, perhaps you've meditated on this before. Anytime there is a dispute about who owns some land - be it a little plot or a whole country, I think about how land ownership is a total illusion. It's as impossible to truly...

    Glenn Gould

I may be in the minority here, but my favorite music is '40s music. Uhh - 1740's, that is. J.S. Bach is my favorite composer of music of all time. Then, Beethoven, Mozart, Hyden, Handel. I wouldn't know Morrisey if I tripped over him (sorry, Halo). Not that I don't enjoy some popular music...

    Poetry

Oh yeah - I don't know why I didn't think of posting the link instead of just the first 2 lines - but sometimes the most obvious solution to a problem is the one I think of last. I would have just pasted the whole poem into my post - but I'm unclear about whether we are allowed to do that. I'm...

    Poetry

IF is not by Robert Frost - it's by Rudyard Kipling. And it is a monumentally great poem. Goggle it. To make it easier to find, here are the first 2 lines: If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

    Have you ever.....

I didn't know "spreading lies" about you and "causing you stress" were criminal acts, in the eyes of the law, and punishable by execution. You imply it when you tell us that you would be pretending you are someone you are not if you don't tell us about this. In other words, if you don't tell...

    Have you ever.....

I never suggested you pretend to be something you are not. I suggested you keep your most terrible thoughts to yourself -except perhaps to your shrink (I hope you have one!). I think it's "interesting" that you see no difference between the two. That's unless you describe yourself as...

    On The Beach

First off, the movie is great - as I remember it. GREAT cast - Gregory Peck, Ava Gardener, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins in the lead roles. I'm definitely going to rent and watch it this weekend. Reading the book, I could visualize these characters in a way that made them even more real...

    Michael Crichton: Prey

I like his technical details too. His book Airframe really interested me, coming from a background of aerospace configuation management. It's such a specialized field, but the book had the basics pretty perfectly. I don't know about Prey though.

    Have you ever.....

We've all had terrible thoughts. But some things are much better left unsaid -and that is one of them.

    On The Beach

I have rarely read a more moving, or effective, book. Yes, Earth Abides was also terriffic - I loved that as well. But On The Beach is a powerhouse. The movie also was great - I remember it from the Late Show years ago - I'll have to rent it and watch it again.

    Poetry

I'm no expert, but... Ozymandius is one of the greates poems ever written. And it's so applicable. My favorite of all might be The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner - about 500 times the length of Ozymandius, though. William Blake; Robert Frost; Kipling, Emmerson, Emily Dickenson, Edna St...

    On The Beach

I've almost finished the book. I have about 30 pages or so to go, so I don't know quite how it finishes, but I'm ready to talk about it. This book, published in the late 1950's, is the defining work of its kind. In fact, it's the ONLY work of it's kind. In the genre of post-apocalyptic...

Who likes The Sound of Music?

When I was in Jr. High School, I saw Carosel with Gordan McCrea and Shirly Jones on TV. It haunted me so, I could not sleep the whole night. Same with State Fair. Gigi, The King and I, of course South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, they are all superb. They don't play these very much on...

    Stephen King

Shade- Fair enough. King's prose work for me though. By the way, did you know Brahms destested - and destroyed - much of his work? I mention it by way of example that an artist's own opinion of their work may be at odds with a whole lot of other's opinions.

    Getting out of jury duty

That might get you off the jury, but it won't get you off jury DUTY. In New York City, you have to sit in the Jury Pool for hours or days before you are called to go into a court room, at which point you might get the chance to try one of those excuses - but it doesn't stop them from returning...

    What is Knowledge?

I am also reminded of 2 verses we used to recite: Why Study? The more you study the more you know; The more you know the more you forget; The more you forget the less you know; The less you know the less you forget; The less you forget the more you know; The more you know the more you...

    Stephen King

Hey Muggle- Yeah - I'm really psyched. I have to read a few things first (darn) but I'm really looking forward to this.

    Great Walls of America

I guess you don't consider deportation or prison time - as you suggested - to be major inconveniences. Again, you not thinking of the effect on others - or their families. You don't see any inconvenience or sacrifice to yourself or to the people YOU know, so you don't see any for anybody...

    Great Walls of America

I don't want this country to build walls around itself. Sound too much like the IRON CURTAIN and I grew up in the 50's and 60's. I'm not saying that I'm in favor of an open door policy either - but a wall? NFW. Why is it that people are always for policies that will mainly involve...
