    Old Sci-Fi books

Thats a really good point about 1984. I've never read anything by Robert Howard. What are his books like?

    Banned book reading

Banned Books I've Read Animal Farm- George Orwell The Witches- Roald Dahl To Kill A Mockingbird- Harper Lee Lord of the Flies- William Golding I'd recommend all of these. Also, it wasn't banned but censored (I'm pretty sure it wasn't banned): A Clockwork Orange: If you read this...

Do you like to read with background noise, or need complete silence?

The boyfriend listens to loud techno after work so I've learnt to concentrate on reading with very loud background noise!

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

Slaughterhouse Five is off the wall, but I loved it!

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

I've tried so hard to read Emma by Jane Austen but it was awful! So stuffy and it revolved around nothing basically. Not even an interesting "nothing" a la Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, it was just a bore. I'm too fearful to try another Austen novel...:(

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

I'm planning to read Lolita soon. Are there any other books by the author (or any other for that matter) that anyone recommends I read before it? :)

Alice Sebold: The Lovely Bones *spoilers*

Warning: Spoilers I really liked The Lovely Bones but the rape scene upset me a little bit (though it was very well written). I didn't really like the ending as I thought it was too flimsy, if that makes sense. I did find the whole possession business a bit far fetched. I was able to follow...

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

I think you're probably the perfect age to read this book because you have the maturity to understand the underlying themes and issues but you can still relate to the agonies of being a teenager!

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

I really liked the book, although I'm not too far off being a teenager myself, so I found the narrative slightly irritating as it reminded me of the teenage boys that I know! Catcher in the Rye is an awesome book that deals with the very essence of teenage angst. Can anyone recommend any other...

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. -Charles Dickens - David Copperfield.

    Hi

Hi, I'm a 20 year old university student who has a passion for the classics and old science fiction novels. However, I am trying out some of the recent best sellers and would love anyone to recommend me some good crime thrillers as well. :)

    Old Sci-Fi books

Hi, I'm not sure how old your children are, but I'm 20 and I love 1984. I understand how it'll continue to be harder and harder to introduced this book to a younger generation as time goes on, but one of the things about 1984 is that Orwell's proposal of a distopian society is so futuristic and...

    Alexandre Dumas

I've just finished reading the Count of Monte Cristo and its one of my all time favourite books. I'm going to start reading the Black Tulip soon, really looking forward to it. Would anyone happen to have a list of all of Dumas' novels?

    Jodi Picoult

I really enjoyed My Sister's Keeper, although I may have been more drawn to it because I'm studying Health Ethics. I'm really looking forward to reading Nineteen Minutes.

    Kurt Vonnegut

The only Vonnegut I've read so far is Slaughter-House Five. Any suggestions for my next one?

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

I agree that The da Vinci Code was very predictable. Its definitely not a classic, not even Dan Brown's best work either.

    Old Sci-Fi books

Not at all. I'm studying science and I love old science fiction books. A lot of them can still be read without modern scientific discoveries imposing themselves upon the story line. Take "Day of the Triffids" for example. Its a book that could be categorised as old sci-fi, and no matter what...
