    War Fiction

I have read 'The things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien, i enjoyed reading the book, thanks. 'Chickenhawk' is on my 'to read' list, i have read only good comments about it, its time now that i went out and actually bought a copy. Thanks for the other recommendations, i will check them out...

    War Fiction

I have always been drawn to war films/books, Birdsong being my favourite book and Apocolypse Now my favourite film. I am particularly interested to hear of other good war books in the same mould as Birdsong, or, just any war book if you found that it blew you away, fiction or non-fiction...

    Ian Rankin

I have only read one book by Ian Rankin (Rebus #9) 'The Hanging Garden' and found it to be a good read, but nothing special. I like a story to move along quickly, and found this book dragged a little at times, though the plot itself was good. I have another book by Rankin on my shelf...

    Top 21: finishing positions?

Did the BBC announce the finishing positions of the top 21 books, or did they just announce the top 5? I ask because i am unable to find the complete finishing order of the top 21 books. I thought it would have been on the Big Read website but its not. If anyone knows the final finishing...

Books you were forced to read at school!

Does anyone think that books such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, Catcher in the Rye & Lord of the Flies etc being read by generations of pupils/students across Britain had anything to do with them making the BBC's top 100 list? I cannot think of any other reason as to why books such as Catcher...

    Ebooks - Have your say...

I have never read an e-book, and i dont intend to. A book is a book "printed sheets of paper fastened between covers". I dont ever see this format being replaced........... how do you get comfy with an e-book? E-books are not the future, and i doubt they ever will be. They could be useful...

    The Big Read: Your Vote

I think Birdsong will be getting my vote. I finished the book just a few days ago, i would go as far as to say it is the best book i have read. It had me from start to finish, it still has me now. I have plenty of books here waiting to be read but i cant bring myself to get started on any of...

    Paulo Coelho: The Alchemist

Although not for me on this occassion, i do agree with what you are saying. I actually surprised myself by taking to The Alchemist. The jargon on the front and back covers should be enough to put anyone off..... lol One thing that really annoys me is when the synopsis on the back cover...

    Gangland Fiction

When it comes to crime fiction I am always telling people to read anything by Elmore Leonard. It would be a sin for anyone who reads crime fiction to go through their life and not pick up one of his novels. I have yet to read another crime fiction author that has anything on him. He is in a...

    The Big Read: Your Vote

What book do you want to win..... what book do you think will win and what book don’t you want to win? I have a few books to read first before I vote for a winner, so I will fill that gap in later! Want to win: ?????? Think will win: Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter Don’t want to win...

    Yann Martel: Life of Pi

OK, I’m confused. I think I may have missed the books deeper meaning. Both stories could be true. But I believe that Pi fabricated his own story to save himself from more grief by going into what really happened. The two reporters at the end of the book, like Murphy points out, only wanted...

    Booker Prize

I am not very good at writing reviews at the best of times Ell, even worse at it when trying to be critical. If I read something that I really enjoyed, I will try and leave a review. I find them easier to write then!

    Yann Martel: Life of Pi

I enjoyed reading Life of Pi, but, I don’t rate it as highly as others. I think all the hype that surrounded it probably affected my reading of it. Out of 10, I would give it a 7…… that ending was something special. It is a book I would recommend others to read, just try and forget about all the...

    Booker Prize

It’s a good book, certainly worth a look. I found it a little one paced at times, but it always picks up again. The ending is good, though not exactly an original idea, I have read a couple of books with similar endings. This sort of ending gets a bit tedious after a while, though in Pierre’s...

    Do you read non-fiction?

I am always telling myself that I should read more non-fiction. On a scale, i would say that for every non-fiction book I read, I would read around 7 fiction books. Non-fiction books that I read are biographies, true crime, and war history!

    Paulo Coelho: The Alchemist

Never give up hope, hold onto your dreams, everything is possible! Murphy, this is what I make of it: ‘The Alchemist’ did speak to the Englishman, they were good friends, he attempted to help him as best he could! The Englishman was a seeker with a one track mind, greed was his...
