Lord of the Rings: Favorite edition?

The folio soc do the one illustrated by the Queen of Denmark, which should be nice, but my sisters got the one made with bible paper thats always been my favourite, only about an inch thick really is a pleasure to thumb through. Also saves on the strain injuries usually associated with reading a...

    Hardback or paperback?

Hardback as a preference, but Im increasingly disappointed with the quality of some of the bindings. If you're going to spend £16 - £25 + on a book I don't wan't the s**t that was Harry Potter 5 - a paperback in a hardbacks clothing. Rant rant rant.

    UK's favourite book is...

Martin, just remember it wasn't for the best book. Even I couldn't argue for LOTR or Winne the Pooh then. Plus Harry P's sold about 250 million books world wide or something ridiculous so the books are pretty popular in their own right.

    Master & Commander

Can't see how they'll make enough money to do another. All movies involving the sea/water get hugely expensive real quick. And as O'Brians books aren't really blockbuster material, a little too intricate for the smash bang whallop that usually equals the big money. Perhaps thats the reason they...

Books you were forced to read at school!

Oh Christ that means I'm the one getting old. Still, damn pleased to see you youngsters having to read the same musty old stuff as I did in MY DAY. :)

Books you were forced to read at school!

Ok, gemma 78, if you were in the same year of school as me how the hell did you get that syllabus? Where is the eternally damned Hardy? Martin you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO right, Hardy SUCKS, Under the f**ing Greenwood Tree gah, The Woodlanders zzzzz, god I hate that man :) Also Phil-t when did...

    Master & Commander

oooooooh Jonno bad review. I really liked it, and not in a Paul Ross 38 thumbs up kindova way, but because I thought it was an excellent adaptation of O'Brian. I thought R Crowe made for a pretty good Captain Aubrey, the Maturin character did feel a little week but that said he doesn't really...

    Ancient Greek and Roman books?

appologies for the poor spelling but The Twelve Caesars by Seutonius?????? is where lots of the facts and myths of some of the more interesting caesars come from. Livy includes Hannibal vs Rome in one of his books. You could also try Casars campagin dairies. For Greece I've only read Herodotus'...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

According to the extras on the LOTR DVD, Tolkien wanted to publish it as one book. However, at the time (after the 2nd World War), paper etc was still in short supply and expensive. To publish it as one would have meant hardly anyone could've afforded to buy it so the publishers decided on a 3...

    Vampire Novel Recommendations

    The Big Read: Your Vote

As for Pride and Prejudice winning 89% of votes for it come from women, still like Phil-t said, it's all about those who do read (women & kids apparantly) and can be bothered to vote. Harry Potter's sold more books than a few so in a poll of 'favourites' it's gotta be up there. My only...

    Epics

They're very much University Press type books and they tend to be paperbacks, Everyman/Leob Classic Library may do hardback's but I doubt it. The problem you might find is getting newer (more accesible) translations in h.back. If you can live with the older translations I guess its down to...

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

Halo, I thought he was alright in the context if a whole programme that left me kind of cold. Perhaps because it was more a blow by blow account (with iffy acted bits) rather than a real discussion which might have been better? Still glad to see Harry Potter is going next week as going last in...

    BBC's The Big Read - Top 100

Blurbb & Murphyz, dudes if you'd've checked my list you could've saved yourself the bother. Still I've figured out why it was a top 21, clearly the BBC wanted a 7 week run, 3 per show. is this what our licence fee pays for :) ?

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

To Maggie61 YES they do need to be read in order, won't make a lick of sense otherwise. Halo I agree on the Daemons. In fact just saw the BBC's review of it for the Big Read thing and I was appalled to see how much I'd forgotten/missed out etc. Still it leaves more for others to find out for...

Should I or Should I Not...

Same guy, different initial. Suddenly I feel the need to add a G to my member name when posting on the sci-fi board. Wasp Factory is good, but I've had trouble getting on with the rest of his non M. Banks stuff. Complicity is amusingly rank by the way. But you'll judge best for yourself. As for...
