My daughter is on book X of the Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence.
Our recent reading aloud books have been His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman), The Thirteen Clocks and the Wonderful O (James Thurber) and we're now on 'Diving Adventure' by H Willard Price. The 'Adventure' books are terribly...
Sorry if I'm missing something obvious....
On the blogs page it says 'Click on the "Blogging" drop down button in the navbar above'
I see no Blogging button, only 'User CP, FAQ, Members List, Calendar, New Posts, Search, Quick Links and Log Out'
Has it been suspended, or am I looking in...
Bel Canto (Ann Patchett) has a notoriously annoying ending.
I agree about Stephen King - he can really set something up, and then it all falls a bit flat. Not to mention leaving exciting hints unresolved. Though I recently read Dreamcatcher and was happy with the ending. And I liked the...
Ell, you asked this question a while ago but I'm a newcomer here, and searching for my favourites - I agree wholeheartedly. Bel Canto is an absolutely extraordinary book, it sucks you completely into its closed, intense world. The epilogue is a let down, especially after the gut-wrenching climax...
I loved Dissolution because it was such a surprise. Dark Fire was good too but had less impact for me.
I used to read historical novels about Henry VIII as a young teenager, and this was fascinating because it was about the effects of what he did, rather than harping on forever about wives and...
I studied Ancient History A Level at school (18 year old exams), and the series was on TV at that time (showing my age...) so I watched it then and really enjoyed it. A friend lent me the discs a year ago, and it was still every bit as good. Sometimes I love the BBC so much I want to hug them!
I'm interested in reading and discussing a book here, though I've got my own book group's book to read (probably true for lots here!). I'm a newcomer, but it seems hard to choose a book by consensus. We found it didn't work in a real life book group, so online must be worse.
We rotate book...
My all time page turner, I've read it 3 times and lent it out to all my friends, and all but one loved it.... 'Replay' by Ken Grimwood. What would you do if you could live your life over again... and again... and again... and the people you loved last time round are dead, different, or never...
1) One Book that made you read it More Than Once:
Lots, so let's pick Perfume by Patrick Susskind
2) One book you would want on a desert island:
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo - because it's long and packed with wonderful thoughts. I'll have it in French if I'm allowed a dictionary too...
I'll have to order more, thanks for the recommendation. Is the fiction any good? There somehow seems little point in his writing fiction when his non-fiction is so well done - and I'm usually a big fiction reader!
I enjoyed the movie, but it leaves so much unsaid, as they almost always do.
I'm reading the trilogy to my 11 year old. I thought it might be too hard for her (she certainly wouldn't get through even a chapter on her own!), but she's loving it. We're currently on The Amber Spyglass, and they...
My friend recently chose this author's 'Coasting' for our book group, and I enjoyed it so much I went on to read Passage to Juneau: A Sea and its meanings.
Raban is English by birth, but seems to have settled in Seattle, which has a pleasing ring to it. Coasting is an account of his first...
Books I loved that I've read to my daughter:
Chronicles of Narnia
The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath (both Alan Garner)
The Adventure books of H. Willard Price
Moomintroll books
Children's books I've discovered as an adult or through reading to her:
The Hounds of the...
... I was looking for a good book forum, and hope this is it!
Difficult as there are so many books out there, but I'll be trawling the search engine for my favourites and maybe get some ideas for my Book Group.
Working mother of an 11 year old, so I'll check out kids' books too. I love...
