In a nutshell, I'm captivated by his unique and bizarre (some would say off-kilter) way of looking at the world, coupled with his ability to create and sustain a mood of equal parts mystery and menace.

These are my favorites, too, with the addition of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I've never been anything less than fascinated by a book or short story by Philip K. Dick.

I haven't seen the movie, but the book is marvelous. Nicholas Sparks is a one of my favorite modern authors.

The Forgotten Door by Alexander Key. I still own the copy that I received and read at age six. It's badly tattered now but no less loved.

Oh, no! It was the Shannara set that that really caught my eye.

I keep my book lists on scattered note cards, most of which I lose and forget about. The ones that remain are the ones that end up deciding which books eventually get read.

I suspect that Capote provided nothing more than valuable guidance, if that.

I tend to scratch notes all over the books I read--agreements, arguments, praise, criticism, etc.

I enjoyed the movie, but the book is far superior.

I absolutely love this thread. It's like being invited into scores of private libraries, all at the click of a button.

I understand where you're coming from, Wabbit. Recently, in an effort to escape having my reading choices prescribed by the local bookstore, I find myself seeking out relatively obscure books from specialty publishers. And more often than not, I'm extremely pleased with the result.

A shame. You missed a real goody.
