    Doubling Up

Me too! I don't usually try on purpose, but once in a while I will come across a book I find interesting, I'll start reading it, and then the book I was already on will get shelved until I finish the second one. If a book doesn't suck me in like that, I consider it not worth reading.

    Revamping the BOTM process

Is there a way to make the voting more prominent on the site? I can see where someone may not notice it.

    Brom: The Child Thief

For those who have not read this book, it is a retreatment of Peter Pan. I absolutely loved it. The characters were vivid and rich. The world was based on Welsh and English myths, but placed in the modern day. The action scenes were well written, and all the more engaging for the realistic...

    Need a new VAMPIRE book

The Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlenne Harris sound like something you might enjoy based on your listed requirements. I only scanned through the other responses, so sorry if someone already mentioned these. This is the series they based the TV show "True Blood" on. I only read the first 3...

Do you read more male/female writers?

I'm not sure whether I read more female or more male writers, but I can say I've noticed more fantasy and science fiction novels published by female authors lately. Some of the ones I've read in the last few years include: Audrey Niffeneger (although her first book is probably in the literature...

Creating the reading habits in children

Thanks for this post. Reading is so important to developing all the skills necessary for a successful academic career, as well as sparking imagination and critical thinking. Reading to your children is very important. My husband tells a story of how he refused to learn to read (beyond what the...

What Did You Read in August

I didn't, but thanks for the info! I looked at her website and no details yet on where she's going, but I'm pretty sure it will be no where near me! lol.

    Can kids read too much?

I'm sorry to hear that; our public library has a regular contingent of parents and children that come back every week. That's for preschool and elementary, and I'm not sure what age your son is, but a lot of libraries have reading related events that are more often. This may not help you, but I...

    Can kids read too much?

Kids aren't the only ones! Point taken, and a good one, although it still doesn't mean that reading too much is necessarily a form of escapism. Reading too much to the detriment of other activities is just a matter of setting priorities, not that it should be taken lightly.

Who's your favorite FEMALE fantasy/sf writer?

After my own heart... Sheri S. Tepper was actually my first exposure to a female fantasy author and I fell in love with her books. Unfortunately, I've read them all and have had to move on to other authors, hehe. I honestly don't have a favorite at the moment though - there are so many wonderful...

    Can kids read too much?

Everyone has a different reason for reading, some hunger for information, others want to escape from reality, many want to read about someone with a similar problem as theirs or a similar hope or dream. There is nothing wrong with fantasy or escapism, it does not mean that a person does not wish...

What Did You Read in August

Is it good or bad that I have to consult my virtual bookshelf in Facebook to recall? hehe Lijia Zhang: "Socialism is Great!": A Worker's Memoir of the New China Jane Lindskold: Thirteen Orphans Julie Powell: Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen Orson Scott Card...

    Asimov's Empire Series

Currents of Space was reprinted in 2009. (I just read it.) I'm not sure about the other two, but you can check with your local library. Edit: I just realized that you asked this question years ago, lol. I'm sure you've found the answer by now!

    Greetings - Scifi and fantasy

Greetings fellow readers. If you hadn't guessed it, I like to read. Furthermore, I'm a librarian, although currently working out of field. My reading tastes are eclectic, but center around fantasy and science fiction. I also enjoy writing; I worked as a nonfiction writer for a while, and have...

    Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead

Foresight indeed, but also the situation at the time. Rand had the fortune (from a writer's standpoint) to be born in Russia under communist rule. America was a land of capitalist opportunity, but that capitalism was being corrupted by socialist ideologies. As someone else mentioned, Rand's...

Elizabeth Garner: The Ingenious Edgar Jones

Has anyone else read this novel? I just finished it. In fact, the last 50 pages I couldn't put it down, I wanted so much to know the ending. It left me wanting to discuss. Is Edgar a misunderstood child or is he truly a criminal? Did he attempt to soar too high and rise above his station, or...
