February 2011: Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice

For those who haven't seen the adaptation with Colin Firth you absolutely MUST see this!!! It's one of my favourite movies/mini series of all time. And it definitely is mercenary. Austen described the marriage situation during the 19th century perfectly. An additional point is the...

February 2011: Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen's books are all of a similar vein. She was very interested in the lives of women - that is, that they didn't have many options, other than marriage. Thus the opening lines in Pride and Prejudice. In Emma the heroine is fairly well off, so she has the means to not ever marry if she...

I love Jane Austen, but I always think of P & P as chick lit for its time.

    Litany's Genre Swap v 1.0

Read Hyperion by Dan Simmons that Anamnesis suggested. Definitely was not a genre I would usually read and great suggestion. I'm going to read the other Hyperion titles and others by him. :)

January 2011: Iain Banks: The Wasp Factory

OKaaaaay I can see the literary merits of this book. I can see that it's written well, the plot keeps you going and of course there's a twist at the end. However, the violence was too off-putting for me and I ended up doing my speed-reading, skipping and jumping kind of reading that I reserve...

King made it a real character of the book, and in the end, appreciated. I liked that touch. I completely agree with you, and she has a finely tuned balance of descriptive prose where her settings do become almost another character of the book, she does this really well in Justice hall...

What do you think of Laurie R King's Sherlock series? Personally I love them. I find myself immersed and I've found that as the series has gone along each book seems to get better as does her writing.

Great book. Definitely up there as one of the best for 2010! Very different to Perdido street station and I think testament to how good a writer he is because he's not getting boxed in by a genre. I really enjoy detective fiction and this was a procedural one that was also urban fantasy...
