By Trudi Canavan. Anyone read these books? The first is called The Magicians Guild, then The Novice, and third is The High Lord. So far I've read the first two and they're really good. The first one starts with Sonea, a girl from the slums, angrily throwing a rock at some magicians and...

This book, by Catherine Jinks, is fantastic. It's historic fiction, set during the Crusades. Although it's written for the YA audience, I think it would be funny for people of all ages. Here's the ditty from the front flap:
"Down on his luck and kicked in the pants one too many times...
I enjoyed this book, too. The pictures were really nice, and the plot was interesting - I think the characters were its best attribute. It was easy to become fond of John Mischief and the Tarrie-cats. What is Clive Barker besides an author? I'd never heard of him before I read the book.
When I first read them, I was luckily ignorant of the meaning of the word, and I didn't realize the implications until much later. I think it was interesting the way Pullman's characters couldn't survive without their "demons" - perhaps he was indicating that without out darker side, we are...
And in the most recently published one, The Grim Grotto, things sort of start to look up for the Baudelaires, rather than them ending in complete misery. I wonder if they will triumph in the 13th book, or will Snicket try to break the norm and have everyone end unhappily?
I'd recomend Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo. It's a bit of fantasy set in modern day America, and it's a little cynical because his grandma and aunts are super-evil and they try to kill his uncle off, and they kidnap/kill his dad (not sure which yet). It's really good.
My favorite book from this genre is Pagan's Crusade, by Catherine Jinks. It's about this kid from Jerusalem who joins up with the Knights Templar and becomes the squire of a knight named Lord Roland de Boucy. His name's Pagan, and he's the most absolutely sarcastic, hilarious, entertaining...
Um ... I really don't know. It was so long ago, and I wasn't paying very close attention. It could have been anything, for all I know - Anything, with a capital A.
In the story, the parents ask the dentist about it, and the dentist said it should wear off, and it did. He didn't have to...

Also, I know you said with models and things, but books that I really enjoy on car trips are the I Spy books by Jean...
When I was in middle school, the teacher read us a story about a kid who had some crowns on his teeth, and found out that he could pick up radio stations with them. When he went to school, the teacher couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from, and by opening and closing his mouth he...
That's very true, a word which here means the opposite of false. I also really enjoyed The Unauthorized Autobiography - the way it had a reversable cover, and the absurd photos of random people, the half burnt newspaper articles, and the index that sends you around in circles.
Oh, me, me! You're right, there's no magic or dragons or wizards, but it's not exactly true to reality. The adults are super, super stupid, for one thing. And some of the inventions that Violet comes up with are not quite plausible. Still, they're very enjoyable - full of mystery, as we're...
I think I'd have to agree with M&O on this, except that I was able to get through it, and am comforted by the hope of an improved sequal.
It was like ... a star wars plot, with Anne McCaffrey dragons, Lord of the Rings dwarves and elves, and Diane Duane's...
For the 9 year old, The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Toni DiTerlizzi. They're fairly brief, but have great illustrations and a lively plot. Fantasy, but set in the real world, about two brothers and a sister who find a Field Guide about mythical creatures that they discover are...
Oh, oh, me! I know what you mean ... generally what happens when I post is that no one ever replies and it just sort of fades away, old and stale, like ... a triscuit that is the last in the box when someone forgot to close the lid. I love to discuss books, but I seem to be reading books that...
I actually enjoyed Sabriel the most of the three. Dunno, must have liked her character a bit more. Did I hear someone say they thought there should be more coming? Because I agree - I kind of wanted to know if Nick and Lirael ever get together, what exactly Mogget has become, how Sameth gets...
