Sillyrabbit, I have heard mixed reviews about Melville's Perdido and I read American Gods. I wouldn't have considered it Dark fantasy. What about the book do you consider Dark? Plus, I am not sure whether I like fantasy set in real time.

You both need to check out Lynn's Nightrunner series. I haven't read the last one yet but she is an excellent author. I have to warn you that even though she is writing the Tamir trilogy second, it is set in the same world before the Nightrunner series. It kinda threw me off at first.
