    national identity

One of my Canadian friends remarked that she was very proud of her government for doing "the right thing" (her words) in regard to same-sex civil rights. She was very proud that her government put human rights ahead of discrimination, in her view. I imagine that's the pride my parents may have...

So So So Bad It Was Good

Dare I say that I liked Ishtar? I thought it was a spoof at first & quite funny. It wasn't until I read a review of it that I realized it was a genuine comedy and not trying to spoof anything. The songs they 'wrote' were hilariously bad.

Score 1 for the English language

I think the movie version is a little exaggerated at times, but for the most part it was true when I was in HS in the 80's. Some of us had friends in each group and didn't fully belong to one group, which could be challenging. Maybe there aren't so many rules for HS guys, but as a girl, there...

How long before you give up on a book??

I judge a book slightly differently. If I put it down and don't feel pulled back to it, makes no difference how many pages I've read, I don't finish it. Usually, another book has caught my attention in the interim, and the first book didn't hold me enough to put down the new book, if that makes...

    World War 2 books

Try Between Silk and Cyanide by Leo Marks. Wonderfully written account of his time spent in the London code making and breaking office. Fascinating stuff. Not sure if you're interested in the Holocaust, but Hitler's Willing Executioners by Daniel Goldhagen is enlightening. Also...

    March gifts

Is it still a big thing on South Street? I haven't paid attention in a few years, but I heard it was getting so out of control (thanks to a certain radio station promoting it) that they were thinking of banning it on South Street. South St has changed so much :(

102 Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn

This is on my To-Read list, but I was worried about the emotional impact. Have you read Afterwords? It's a compilation of essays and thoughts written about 9/11 and was so difficult to read because of the emotional impact. It brought that awful day back again.

    Differences Between Men and Women?

This is so true! My husband gets frustrated with me when I read a map and he asks how long to a certain place and I say "3 inches", 'cos that's what it looks like on the map. For some reason I don't do the inch/mile conversion in my head when he asks  One more thing, many women...

what's the worst or strangest advice you've ever received?

When I was a kid, drinking flat Coke definitely helped me to ease tummy troubles, no matter how bad. Ginger Ale also worked. Never heard about the salt & vinegar chips, tho. Did she say to give him the coke & chips together? That sounds awful! The strangest advice I've gotten is to use...

    Jonathan Carroll

I loved Wooden Sea - it absorbed me, made me think and I was sad that it ended. Read him, you won't regret it :)

    Learning German

Pimsleur makes some wonderful language CD courses - they're basically focused on speaking the language (as opposed to conjugating verbs and deconstructing sentences) and they helped a friend better his Spanish before moving to Spain. They're not cheap, but well worth it & you get them from...

    Hilarious Reads

I laughed out loud reading Green Grass Grace by Sean McBride (fiction, the narrator is hysterical) and I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan. Also armed with quite a wit is Geoffrey Dyer.

    marriage

Congrats on 8 years :) I'll see 6 months on the 21st (just a newbie). If you had asked these questions 2 years ago I would have said "Marriage? No stinking way!" but it's funny how life flows. I was divorced from my first husband after 3 years of an awful marriage and it left me thinking...

    Valentines Day

Yep, with you on that, although I'm not a huge Thanksgiving person. My plan for Thanksgiving is to go on vacation since we already have 2 days off so we only use 3 vacation days. This year we went on our honeymoon and had Thanksgiving dinner in Hawaii. Next year I'm hoping for Scotland. My...

    Valentines Day

I got a Dyson for Christmas and have become a vacuuming freak; it's the greatest thing (this from a girl who didn't even own a vacuum cleaner until then) My husband surprised me by announcing we have dinner reservations for V Day. He's more romantic than I am - I hate V Day and...

    Southern Florida Related Fiction Recommendations?

Carl Hiaasen writes books based in Florida - they're mystery capers featuring some outrageous characters (my favorite was "Sick Puppy"), written with such wit and social commentary it was hard to put down even after a long tiring day. Enjoy :)

    Current Non-Fiction reads

I get on WWI and WWII kicks from time to time. Have you read "Between Silk and Cyanide" by Leo Marks? It is an account of his time in the WWII code office in London. The history is quite interesting and his writing style is witty and self-deprecating. :)

    Current Non-Fiction reads

I've been reading "The Sewing Circles of Herat" by Christina Lamb and it is a fascinating account of Afghanistan. It is opening my eyes to things that I wasn't aware of in regard to the Taliban and the war (constant war, poor country has been devastated by war, and not just the current...
