    Erik Larson

I looked up the Halifax Explosion online because I'd never heard much about it, and I'm suprised because similar to the Galveston Hurricane the explosion was an absolutely devestating tragedy, but I'd heard about it only once or twice. Its also interesting that there are parallels between the...

    Erik Larson

Yes I find Isaac's Storm really interesting because reading the book one would think that the hurricane would have been one of those tragedies that everyone remembers and talks about, but I had never really heard all that much about the Galveston hurricane and definitely nothing about the...

    Classics that disappoint

I completely agree. I attempted to get through Bleak House and it was certainly... bleak. That said, I love Dickens's short stories, namely A Christmas Carol. I love the Muppet Christmas Carol, a take on that story. In any case I found Bleak House to be the most disappointing of the classics...

    Shaun of the Dead

Haha, I looooooooooovvvve Shaun of the Dead, I like the part where they are all beating one of the zombies around in a circle, that was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen. Watching that and then watching 28 Days Later, I couldn't keep a straight face during the latter of the two.

    Classics

Good point, I suppose its true that when you are forced to read something in school and then write a huge essay on the book it really takes the joy out of it... I wish that weren't true, it would be wonderful to get Tolstoy on summer reading lists. In regards to Tolstoy's work I...

    John Steinbeck

Of Mice and Men was my favorite until I saw the film... I had an image of the story in my head and the movie shattered that, I shouldn't have watched it because Of Mice and Men was a fabulous book.

    Classics

That's reassuring to hear, but I've found that particularly in schools classic literature (always with the exception of Shakespeare and Homer) is being traded for books like Tortilla Curtain, Raisin in the Sun, Fahrenheit and In the Time of the Butterflies. Those are all some of my favorites...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I'm a page folder and it ashames me to say so but bookmarks annoy me. Unless they are really pretty (Please check out my new thread, "Classics", it will be really interesting when people start replying!!!)

    Classics

Well to start this off, my favorite is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I read it and I couldn't beleive that something written so long ago could be so difficult to put down.

    Classics

My recent literary obsession is classic literature. I've been reading Dickens, Tolstoy, Dumas, Hugo, etc. I'm worried that the works of all these great authors are someday going to be ignored, so if you know of any classics that you can remember and would like to recommend, please discuss them...

    Book Reccomendation? :)

Oh my goodness I'd forgotten about The Other Boleyn Girl, I really liked that book, Philippa Gregory portrays Anne Boleyn beautifully. I definitely recommend it, but depending on what you are looking for here are some other good ones: - White Oleander by Janet Finch (It's pretty powerful with...

    Erik Larson

Erik Larson is the author of the two bestselling non-fiction books Devil in the White City and Isaac's Storm, both of which I highly recommend. "Devil" is particularly compelling. It is the account of two completely different figures, an architect and a murderer, in the Columbian Exposition. I...

    Leo Tolstoy: Anna Karenina

This book is absolutely brilliant, I love that I will read one chapter during which I come to see a character as an antagonist, and then I will read the next chapter in that character's point of view and I will view them as a protagonist. Levin is my favorite charcter, I love the theory that...
